Emmeline or Marnie

Misslemon01 · 11/11/2017 00:30

Emmeline and Marnie are currently our front runners. Emmeline relates to Pankhurst, and Marnie has a Hebrew origin (my husband’s family is Jewish). Which is better? I’m leaning towards Marnie, though slightly concerned it could sound too American :/

Marnie, very cute.

Oxcheeks · 11/11/2017 00:36

Marine from me, not that I don't like Emmaline but Marnie is short, sweet and quirkie - yep deffo my vote 👍

DullAndOld · 11/11/2017 00:37

love Marnie, wish i had chosen it.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 11/11/2017 01:12

Emmeline is very pretty, OP.

Marnie's quite nice, but am afraid Alfred Hitchcock spoiled it for me.
(Though I suppose, strictly speaking, the film character was "Margaret"!).

Pemba · 11/11/2017 03:38

Does Marnie have a Hebrew origin? I thought it was just a diminutive for either Mary, Margaret or Marian/Marianne? Of course Mary and therefore Marian which derives from it are originally from the Bible, did you mean that? - I'm interested. I like Marnie, but it does sound like it should be short for something.

Emmeline is nice.

DramaAlpaca · 11/11/2017 03:40

Emmeline for me, gorgeous name.

I do like Marnie, it's pretty, but it sounds like a nickname to me.

SuperBeagle · 11/11/2017 03:53

Marnie's not Hebrew. It's a diminutive of Marina.

Much prefer Emmeline. It's beautiful.

CaptainWarbeck · 11/11/2017 03:59

Oh I love Emmeline. A bit unusual and lots of lovely nicknames.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/11/2017 06:38

Love love love Marnie.

Mumsiemummy1 · 11/11/2017 06:51

Emmeline, such a lovely name. I'm afraid Geordie shore has tainted the name Marnie to something tacky imo.

17caterpillars1mouse · 11/11/2017 07:22

I really like both

Not helpful

Misslemon01 · 11/11/2017 08:24

Thanks all!

Yes Marnie does come from Hebrew. As well as other languages, like all names. It means rejoice.

guestofclanmackenzie · 11/11/2017 08:31

Ooooh I like both!

Marnie slightly more than Emmaline as Marnie would be difficult to shorten.

You could use the other as a middle name.. Emmaline Marnie or Marnie Emmaline? Slight mouthful but then middle names are rarely used on a daily basis.

SleepingInYourFlowerbed · 11/11/2017 08:33

I'd probably choose Marnie to avoid the different pronunciations of Emmaline.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 11/11/2017 09:15

Emmeline (Emmie).

BernardBlacksHangover · 11/11/2017 09:20

Emmeline by about three million miles Grin! It’s lovely. I don’t like Marnie at all (sorry).

DuggeeHugs · 11/11/2017 09:26

Marnie! But I'm biased as it was my great- grandmother's name

therealreason · 11/11/2017 09:28

Emmeline is lovely! Marnie unfortunately just makes me think of Geordie Shore Blush

LadyKyliePonsonbyFarquhar · 11/11/2017 09:29

Emmeline definitely.

wellyclad · 11/11/2017 09:32

Emmeline is beautiful.
Like other posters, Marnie just makes me think of Geordie Shore..

Misslemon01 · 11/11/2017 09:37

@Duggeehugs - I love hearing that Marnie is someone’s great grandmother’s name! I don’t watch Geordie Shore so that link is lost on me a bit, and I don’t mind the Hitchcock reference :)

With Emmeline, it represents something so wonderful (suffrage) but slight concern she will be saying ‘no, not Emily, it’s Emmeline’ her whole life...

Marnie...by a mile.

daisypond · 11/11/2017 10:03

Emmeline. I don't like Marnie at all.

TatianaLarina · 11/11/2017 10:37

Marny by far (don’t like the ie). Emmeline is awful, sounds like a cow.

Misslemon01 · 11/11/2017 10:48

@TatianaLarina ‘sounds like a cow’...?? Ha! Some mumsnet users really follow the philosophy of speaking as they find...
