Emmeline or Marnie

Emmeline and Marnie are currently our front runners. Emmeline relates to Pankhurst, and Marnie has a Hebrew origin (my husband’s family is Jewish). Which is better? I’m leaning towards Marnie, though slightly concerned it could sound too American :/

Marnie

NotAgainYoda · 11/11/2017 11:36

If you ant a Pankhurst name, Sylvia is lovely

NotAgainYoda · 11/11/2017 11:38

... or Estelle; which was Sylvia's actual first name

NotAgainYoda · 11/11/2017 11:39

I note also that Sylvia's sisters (Emmeline's other daughters) were Adella and Christabel

C0untDucku1a · 11/11/2017 11:39

emmeline is lovely. Good strong name.
Marnie is nice too but would be second choice.

C0untDucku1a · 11/11/2017 11:40

Christabel is indeed lovely. But not on the op’s list...

BernardBlacksHangover · 11/11/2017 11:41

Sylvia is lovely. I also like the Plath connection.

  1. Sylvia
  2. Emmeline
  3. Marnie
VioletCharlotte · 11/11/2017 11:41

Emmeline is lovely. Not keen on Marnie (but I think that's because I know a Marnie and not keen on her!)

BernardBlacksHangover · 11/11/2017 11:42

violet

I know a really horrible Marnie too! Really horrible. Was awful to her sons growing up and they (my age group) have ended up quite messed up.

NotAgainYoda · 11/11/2017 11:42

COunt

Yes, yes, you are right

Must try to remember not to be so excessively 'helpful' in future

Glad you realised how inappropriate you were being Yoda. Sometimes people fail to see that when being given a choice of two names someone likes, disregarding them completely and instead listing others they are not considering is a bit rude.

NotAgainYoda · 11/11/2017 11:49

I know right? It's not as if she mentioned a Panhurst connection, or that she might want suggestions she's not thought of, or that she can feel free to ignore me if she wants.

As long as you are happy, that's all care about

NotAgainYoda · 11/11/2017 11:51

And, erm, I expressed a preference for Marnie. Thereby not ignoring her 2 choices

But if that's rude, well...

BernardBlacksHangover · 11/11/2017 12:00

With Emmeline, it represents something so wonderful (suffrage)

The op said this^^. I don’t see how it’s rude to mention other Suffragette names Confused. The only comment the op seems annoyed by is the cow comment, which was a little rude.

Misslemon01 · 11/11/2017 12:56

Thank you everyone - totally ok to throw in other suffrage or otherwise related names! It’s really nice of everyone to pitch in :)

Even the cow comment was fine! I was just a bit shocked initially by the bluntness! But it’s fine, not everyone has to love the name at all.

Both are nice names but I’d probably go with Emmeline

fannythrobbing · 11/11/2017 15:43

I have an Emmeline (pron: em-meh-leen) and still love it. Pregnant again and just found out it’s a girl and there are no names (yet) I like quite as much as Emmeline.

pilates · 11/11/2017 17:19

Emmeline, beautiful
Marnie, not keen

bridgetreilly · 12/11/2017 10:40

Emmeline. I don't think she'll have to be correcting people all the time. It's a perfectly good name in its own right.

PeasAndHarmony · 12/11/2017 10:44

Mich prefer Marnie
