What kind of boy do you imagine?
What kind of man?

Do you mean zay-vee-er or zay-veh-er?

The former, I would think "that's being pronounced unusually." The latter, I would think "that's being pronounced wrong."

The only one I can think of who pronounces it like that is the character from X-Men TBH. I know a few but they are either Zah-vee-ay or Ha-vee-air

I think it's one of those names where you will constantly have to correct people.

I know a Xavier, he's French and it's pronounced Zav-ee-eh but the ay on the end is quite soft sounding, a bit like somewhere between ay and eh

Xavier, for some reason conjures up an image of a Jesuit priest in Shogun.

But it is a cool name.

I know one. I thought it was a bit odd as both parents are British with no connection to France but quite cool.

As a boy, I imagine a child whose parents are either X-men/Marvel comic fans (so would expect the child to be pretty cool in a quirky/sciency way, encouraged to express themselves, perhaps with niche or non-mainstream interests) or parents have French/Spanish heritage, so perhaps bilingual, slightly worldly/sophisticated.

As a man, either of these children who grew up often explaining/correcting his name and being memorable to people because of it, so someone who is patient, individual, independent, articulate, kind, empathetic, self confident.

I'd pronounce it zav-ee-air, and would expect a handsome Frenchman trailing Gauloises

Hav-ee-air is the Spanish pronunciation, Zav-ee-aye/eh is the French.

It’s Zav-EE-ay in English, Hav-EE-ay if Spanish or South American.

It’s quite a Catholic name and I think it’s lovely but one lad I knew was in care of local authority, tiny blonde thing who spent half his life in the police station.

In general I’d think he had educated middle class parents - unless mispronounced, in which case aspirational parents or old money Catholic family like the Norfolks.

I’ve only heard it pronounced ZA-vee-e. I quite like it.

There was a nun in school called Sr Xavier. It was pronounced beginning with a Z and rhyming with saviour. In fact I used to think her name was Sr Saviour until I saw it written down.

My cousin is a Xavier. My aunt is french and their children were given trad French names.
His name is pronounced Zav-ee-yay.
He's intellectual and quirky.
I personally don't like the US pronunciation of Ex-ay-ve-er, to my ears it sounds a little bit uncultured and loses it's delicacy as a name (not that my opinion is especially important!).
I think an Anglicized version like the one suggested upthread is pleasant though.
