Margot

Have a girl due in January. We both LOVE Margot however only how it sounds, not how it’s written, wouldn’t want to go with Margo or Margaux either. Unfortunately it just looks to harsh with our surname and every time I see it written down I think of maggot!

Can you lovely people think of any similar names?? We like more traditional old fashioned names

Thanks in advance!

I love Margot too but don't like it written down. We went with Florence for our DD but also discussed Alice, Eleanor, Clarice, Emilia, Emma, Elizabeth, Katherine, Laura, Phoebe, Dorothy/Dorothea and Heather.

Margot is lovely.

Margareta?

RedPandaMama · 30/10/2017 16:27

Could always go with Margaret or Marjorie and have Margot/Maggie/Mary as nicknames? Smile

IVflytrap · 30/10/2017 16:41

I agree that Margaret, with Margo(t) as a nickname would work nicely. If that's not for you, how about:

Pearl
Mabel
Maeve
Vivien
Iris
June
Lucy
Thea
Nicole
Beatrix
Daphne
Clara

Martha

MadisonAvenue · 30/10/2017 16:52

I think Margot is a really harsh sounding name. My mother in law is Margaret and she grew up with 'Maggots' as a nickname.

I love the suggestion of Martha.

Notalitigator · 30/10/2017 16:53

I'm not a fan of it tbh but I think these names are in a similar vein

Greta
Edith/Edie
Adeline/Ada/Ida
Martha
Frances

AnyaMoondial · 30/10/2017 16:57

Helen
Jane

Margaret and Martha are good shouts, will speak to DH about them, thanks

Some lovely suggestions on here. It’s sooo hard choosing a name! Really stressing me out!

QueenInTheNorth26 · 30/10/2017 18:18

My auntie is called Marguerite (Mar-gur-eat). She goes by Margo.

scampiandchips1 · 30/10/2017 18:20

Marguerite is nice. Is your Auntie British?

Do you think Margaret is too old fashioned? I can’t imagine a little baby called Margaret! Is it a common name still?

And what are all your thoughts on spelling it Margo? Looks like Mango but that’s better than Maggot I guess!

Yes. Fab name.

bridgetreilly · 30/10/2017 18:45

Margot is much more elegant than Margo. I think it's a lovely name.

Chaffinch4 · 30/10/2017 19:07

Magdalene?
Esther?
Dora?
May?
Mauve?

Chaffinch4 · 30/10/2017 19:08

That last one should be Maeve!

blueskyinmarch · 30/10/2017 19:15

My DD (age 19) has a friend called Margot. They call her Madge. Just warning you!

icantgetnosleep5 · 30/10/2017 20:05

Olive, Bernadette , Evangeline , Alba.. I like old fashioned names (search google for nun names)!

I actually have a Margot, who was originally Astoria, but we changed it down the line ! I wasn't a huge fan of how it was written either , but I'm glad I went with the 'proper/authentic ' spelling now
Good luck ! :)

Excusemyfrench · 30/10/2017 21:48

In France we spell it Margaux. Maybe that helps? X

MollyHuaCha · 30/10/2017 21:50

Love Margot.

Also Margaux, Margaret and Marguerita

flyingpigsinclover · 30/10/2017 21:51
