Still haven't named week old daughter

Hi

My baby girl is over a week old and we still haven't settled on a name for her. We thought we would name her Violet, but we're not sure she looks like one, and various family members have told us how horrible the name is!

So our current shortlist is
Anna
Violet
Catherine (Kitty)
April
Thea

Any thoughts/opinions /suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Anna is such a lovely name. Classic, versatile, international... and there really aren’t very many of them around. I know loads & loads of children and only one of them is called Anna.

I can understand why you are drawn to Violet but when I see it written down it’s so close to “violent”. How about Viola? Seems more melodic.

Catherine which is the French spelling (arrived with the Normans) is the usual spelling in the UK.

Catherine is a classic name which doesn't date.

Anna by a country mile from your list! Catherine is also lovely.

I like Violet when I see it written down but a lot of people lose the ‘o’ in pronunciation and it becomes vile-et, which isn’t very pretty.

Violet is really cute! You should ignore family members, definitely!

Do you like Viola?

boredofmyoldname · 31/10/2017 16:31

My favourite is Anna and I also like Catherine but Kitty is horrid!

Thea and Violet are nice but don't sound good in my harsh Glasgow accent!

Dislike April.

According to whom?
I know a few Katherines but no Catherine’s.
I probably prefer it with a C though.

And my name is Katherine.
And no, I am not constantly having to spell it, everyone always spells it as Katherine which happens to be correct.

Movablefeast · 31/10/2017 17:15

It is originally Greek and was spelt with a K. It travelled across Europe and in French was spelt with a C. That is when it entered the UK and Ireland with the Normans. K is also correct but the traditional spelling in France and the British Isles is with a C.

I vote Anna! Have one and love it. Catherine is also great and we are considering that or on of ours. Also really like Thea. Viola is nicer than violet in my opinion and I definitely wouldn't go for April, it just seems odd if not born in the month.

ibentmywookie · 01/11/2017 14:21

You have great taste in names! Both mine and my dd's name are on your list.

I know a small April and a small Violet, both suit their names very much.

Catherine/Katherine is nice as it has a lot of shortenings, Kitty, Kate, Cat/Kat, etc, but does feel more dated to me as there were several in my class at school.

Highpeak · 02/11/2017 16:08

Anna, was one of my choices overruled by DH as boring but I think it's classic and elegant

buttercup54321 · 03/11/2017 00:49

Catherine Violet.

Violet by a million Miles on your list. Catherine is so plain, dull and ordinary.

I know a gorgeous baby Violet and its an utterly adorable name, whenever I'm with my friend and tells people her name, its amazing the amount of instant, beaming happy smiles hearing Violet gets them. People have nothing but lovely things to say about it- more so than any other girls names I've personally heard.

Movablefeast · 03/11/2017 20:24

Violet is pretty but also popular and will date with this generation. Catherine is a classic that never goes out of style.

I wouldn't say Catherine Tate, Catherine Zeta Jones, Cate Blanchett, Catherine Heigl, Katherine Hepburn or Catherine Deneuve, are or were plain, dull or ordinary.
