Abel? Or Suggestions for twin names

SupermarketSally · 26/10/2017 09:13

We are having boy/girl twins and really struggling with boys names.

I’ve posted before as we had chosen Jasper but we’ve both gone off of it now.

Current top runner for girls name is Effie. I dislike ‘matchy’ twin names so don’t want anything that begins in E or ends in the ‘ie/y’ sound.

We already have 3 DD’s and tend to go for slightly uncommon but not unheard of names.

So, thoughts on Abel? Or any other suggestions please? (We can’t have anything beginning or ending in S or X as it clashes with our surname)

I'd call them Sebastian and Viola after the twins in Tweflth Night.

NinonDeLenclos · 26/10/2017 11:01

I have to be honest I was gobsmacked at not having heard of Cain and Abel and I'm an atheist.

SupermarketSally · 26/10/2017 11:06

@NinonDeLenclos I’m surprised I hadn’t heard of it either.

In a Thomas Hardy novel (can't remember which one) there is a character called Cain whom everyone calls Cainey so that he isn't embarrassed about his name. His mum got mixed up when she chose his name and forgot which one was the murderer - pity she wasn't on MN! Grin

ScrubbyGarden · 26/10/2017 11:37

I think Abel is lovely, but I wouldn't for a twin. Someone will start calling his sister Cain at some point too.

Short biblical names- Seth? Abe (Abraham)?
A names- Alden? Alf(red)

Naming is so hard!

Protectingmydaughterfromfilth · 26/10/2017 11:39

My surname is Abel and I got bullied SOOO badly for it as a kid at school. It affected my entire education. Please keep this in mind

Ionarocks · 26/10/2017 11:45

I know a little Abel, I like it.

Certainly better than being the murderer brother Cain!

Ionarocks · 26/10/2017 11:45

Why did you get bullied? Can't think what there is to bully about the name.

Lunathemoon · 26/10/2017 11:50

Bloody hell OP, some people have been very rude to you on this thread. I know the story but I wouldn't care either...like you said it's not like you're calling your kid Judas! I have an Effie and we considered Rafe so I think that's a good suggestion :) we also like Samson (Sonny)

PuppyMonkey · 26/10/2017 11:55

Well I know I'm in the minority here but I actually prefer Cain. Grin

There have been a few Abels in schools I’ve taught at - although they have been pronounced AH-bel or Ah-BEL rather than Ay-bel. I don’t recall any child ever being teased for their name. I’ve always taught in inner London boroughs so maybe it’s just because they have been very diverse places, but I do think that people make too much of what other people will think when really there are so many names now that other children certainly, really don’t care.

Protectingmydaughterfromfilth · 26/10/2017 12:09

Lona I got called -Disabled

-Unable -Able-to-enable

etc etc

You get the gist.

JediStoleMyBike · 26/10/2017 13:26

Not a nice experience but I have a really normal name and surname and even that was taken the mick out of, as well as my red hair and freckles. Kids will be horrible about absolutely anything.

Ttbb · 26/10/2017 13:38

I don't like the name Abel. Especially for twins/brothers. Maybe pick sonething with less violent connotations?

Protectingmydaughterfromfilth · 26/10/2017 13:50

As soon as I was able to, I changed my surname. I was so sick of it. Then there’s call centres or anyone on the phone. Having to spell it out every time I say it. A-b-e-l. Or it get’s mistaken for Abdul. Arrrrrbel. Abbell. I got so so sick of it I changed it at very first opportunity. Soon as I turned 16.

Doubletrouble42 · 26/10/2017 13:53

Oh bullshit about cain and able what complete nonsense some of you talk. Anyway abel was the younger " good" one so no horrid villainous connotations. Op, don't listen, it's a lovely name.

Doubletrouble42 · 26/10/2017 13:54

Abel!!! Bloody predictive text

Toddlerteaplease · 26/10/2017 13:57

My first thought was Cain and Able as well. Don’t like Either name and Effie reminds me of elephants. Sorry!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 26/10/2017 14:00

Predictive text rather unravelled your point, there, double and confirmed what protecting said.?

Lunathemoon · 26/10/2017 14:07

Toddlerteaplease. She didn't ask your opinion on Effie 🙄🙄

Sophronia · 26/10/2017 15:31

My first thought was Cain and Abel (and I’m an atheist). I really like the name Abel though!

euanthesheepiloveyou · 26/10/2017 17:00

What about Amos?

Fran003 · 26/10/2017 17:26

I have to say I'm shocked at some of the responses on here? Whatever happened to support or god forbid diplomacy?? Ok, you don't like the name, that's fine everyone is entitled to their opinion. However there are much nicer ways to convey your point. Insulting someones intelligence or adding horrid connotations certainly isn't one of them!

FuzzyOwl · 26/10/2017 17:42

I like Able.

If you said you were looking at calling your daughter Eve, a name consistently in the top 200 in England and Wales, I certainly wouldn’t be thinking or saying everyone will associate her with Adam.

FuzzyOwl · 26/10/2017 17:43

@Ecclesiastes

Seriously, OP. Like I say, I tend to assume that other people had the education I did, which is stupid of me, I know.

Shame you didn’t learn some manners whilst having your education, like most people do.
