I agree that with a Y Sydney looks feminine...you may be ok with this but would your son like a 'girly' version of his name? To me it's like spelling a boys name Ashleigh rather than Ashley (one seems far more feminine than the other) think of what your son will prefer not you. I also prefer the longer version of names for BC so for these reasons I would chose George or Warren.

I’d be mindful that majority of posts think Sydney is female spelling. So irrespective of your preference the teachers,nursery staff, social circle will probably also think Sydney is a female name

Look you've got people queuing up here to tell you that Sydney is the female spelling. It's the first thing I thought of too. So yes that should tell you that it's a bad idea unless you want him to be explaining it forever! Have a girl and use Sydney then - it's fab. But feminine!
