Anya pronunciation in the UK

After deciding on the name Anya (thank you those who helped) i have realised that it can be pronounced in a few ways. I like Ann-ya (as in ‘an’ apple). Is this the most common in the uk?
I have seen:
Ann-ya (my favourite)
Arn-ya
Awn-ya
On-ya
How would you pronounce it and is Ann-ya wrong?
Thank you!

In my accent:

Aine = awn-ya
Anya = Ann-ya

Francis - I think that you probably need to hear it! Phonic versions of how we say names never look great

Tunic · 16/10/2017 18:13

Where are you? I have only met ones pronounced Ann-ya in England but Americans say Awnya.

Valeriemalorie · 16/10/2017 18:19

This reminds me of DD's homework to find a list of homophones and we found "ant" and "aunt" online. Not pronounced the same to us at all!

Anyway, I would say Ann - ya. Lovely name x

Ann-Ya

Tabymoomoo · 16/10/2017 18:23

Only ever heard it pronounced Ann-ya in this country. I think the vast majority of people pronounce it this way so I would say don't not pick the name because a minority get the pronunciation wrong.

Ttbb · 16/10/2017 18:24

Un-ya is the closest English speakers seem to get to correct pronounciation.

Ttbb · 16/10/2017 18:25

*correct pronunciation is U-nya

Tabymoomoo · 16/10/2017 18:26

Sorry didn't mean get pronunciation wrong just meant different from how you want it.

WyfOfBathe · 16/10/2017 18:28

Ann-ya

Arn-ya sounds American to me but I'm not sure I've ever actually heard an American say it!

Butterfly1975 · 16/10/2017 19:00

DD is Anya.

She always without fail gets Ann-ya apart from our American friends who say it Arn-ya. I don't mind it pronounced like that but it does sound like a different name!!

Smoliver · 16/10/2017 19:06

I'd say Ann-ya. Haven't heard it being pronounced any other way

Sophronia · 16/10/2017 21:05

Ann-ya

sunshine555 · 16/10/2017 23:31

Thank you all. It seems Ann-ya is the most common pronunciation in the UK which is how i will pronounce it. I expect we will only be spending time in the US and Europe for holidays (no relatives there), and i haven’t been to Russia, so saying it as Ann-ya shouldn’t cause too many problems. Thanks! Smile

If I saw Anya, I'd pronounce it Ann-ya....not sure how else people would pronounce it!

Oh OP, it is such a beautiful, Eurpoean name. I think it will be a lovely name for your baby. But - I'm sorry to write this but if you give your baby a European name, you really should think hard before mispronouncing it (and also in my opinion misspelling it).

Where I am from (the NL) it is spelt Anja.

I now live in Australia and am imagining Ann-ya said with a strong nasal Oz accent, and it is dreadful. Un-ya sounds nice, no matter what type of English accent.

100% it is said as Un-Yuh.

A variant (which was my grandmother's name) is Anneke (pronounced Unn-uh-kah).

Firefries · 17/10/2017 04:28

It could be pronounced Oniya

Mum2OneTeen · 17/10/2017 04:28

Ann-yar

Ionarocks · 17/10/2017 06:38

I've only ever heard it pronounced as Ann ya. Go for it.

mamabeak · 17/10/2017 17:14

[an ya] or maybe [ahn ya] where ah is a long a, versus a short a sound,

Perhaps [an ee ah].

Not sure where people are getting an /r/ sound between the /a/ and /n/ of an, or Anna.

I believe some Americans pronounce Anna, Annika, etc as uh rather than a when a short a and eg pasta as pawsta for a longer a sound.

As others have pointed out Aine is a different name/origins and follows different pronunciation rules.

butterflycatcher · 18/10/2017 21:56

I'd say "Un-ya"

greendale17 · 18/10/2017 22:00

Only ever heard Ann-ya

steppemum · 18/10/2017 22:06

Oh OP, it is such a beautiful, Eurpoean name

and an English name spelt Anya, and a Russian name spelt Anya (well, spelt in Cyrillic, but that is the nearest English version)

There are standard English spellings/variants (and pronunciations) of many names which exist in other languages.
eg Izak in Dutch, Isaac in English
Mirjam in Dutch, Miriam in English.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 18/10/2017 22:10

Ann-ya. My friend's got an Anya.
