Anya pronunciation in the UK

After deciding on the name Anya (thank you those who helped) i have realised that it can be pronounced in a few ways. I like Ann-ya (as in ‘an’ apple). Is this the most common in the uk?
I have seen:
Ann-ya (my favourite)
Arn-ya
Awn-ya
On-ya
How would you pronounce it and is Ann-ya wrong?
Thank you!

I'd say Ann-ya

superking · 16/10/2017 13:40

I know two and they are both Ann-ya.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/10/2017 13:40

I've only ever heard it pronounced Ann-ya.

RhonaRugMuncherr · 16/10/2017 13:46

I would say Arn-ya. This is precisely why dp and I didn't use this name (it was the only one we both liked on 'named together' website) as he pronounced it as Ann-ya.

WhyOhWine · 16/10/2017 13:50

There is an Irish name Aine (sp?) which I think is pronounced more like Onya.
I think anya is pronounced Ann ya

Chaffinch4 · 16/10/2017 14:07

Ann-ya. Never heard another pronunciation. Lovely name.

everydayanewday · 16/10/2017 14:26

Ann-ya, but I’ve heard Arn-ya.

Stringofpearls · 16/10/2017 14:29

I agree with several others, Ann-ya. I like it, I went to school with an Anya who was super intelligent and a little mysterious.

steppemum · 16/10/2017 14:31

I probably used to say Ann-ya
but since I lived in a Russian speaking country, my inclination would be to say Arn-ya

I think frozan has increased the likelihood of people sayign Arn-y after Anna (Arna) in the film

AppalachianWalzing · 16/10/2017 14:33

I base my pronunciation from buffy the vampire slayer so would say Onya. I haven't heard Annya but again, I think Buffy is the only time I've come across the name.

The name Aine is pronounced Awnya, which is different again.

bluebells1 · 16/10/2017 14:35

The one I know calls herself On-ya

TempsPerdu · 16/10/2017 14:36

Only ever heard Ann-ya for Anya. I’ve come across a couple of Aines, which as others have said is pronounced differently. Lovely name, by the way!

NauticalDisaster · 16/10/2017 14:38

I would say Awn-ya

grendel · 16/10/2017 14:41

I know three people of varying ages called Anya/Anja and they all pronounce it Ann-ya. I've never heard it pronounced any other way.

Also knew a girl called Aine - pronounced On-ya - but that is a different name.

Roomba · 16/10/2017 14:43

I'd say Ann-ya , as would most round here (N Lancs ). DS has a friend called Anya though, whose mother is from London and has a very cut glass RP accent. She doesn't quite say Ahhn-ya, but it's definitely not Ann-ya either - somewhere halfway between the two if that's possible!

Redpramlady · 16/10/2017 14:45

Ann ya

mamahanji · 16/10/2017 14:46

I love the name and pronounce it
Arn-ya

OlennasWimple · 16/10/2017 14:49

I say Ann-ya, but the American pronunciation is more usually On-ya

Ecureuil · 16/10/2017 14:50

I’d say Ann-ya, as do the 2 I know

DramaAlpaca · 16/10/2017 14:53

Anya is pronounced Ann-ya.

JesusTapdancingChrist · 16/10/2017 14:54

It's Ann-ya.

steppemum · 16/10/2017 16:20

Anya is pronounced Ann-ya

er....no.
you pronounce it that way. It is not pronounced that way everywhere.

DramaAlpaca · 16/10/2017 16:48

Sorry steppemum I should've started my comment with 'In my experience...' and not sounded so dogmatic about it Grin

steppemum · 16/10/2017 16:50
