Sciency names

Not pregnant but TTC. Just started discussing names with DH from a theoretical point of view.

I like classic, old fashioned names. We don't agree when it comes to boys names. DH has suggested Edison for a boy (as in Thomas Edison) - he's a nerd and likes the idea of a child being named after someone in the sciences.

What do you think of Edison? I'm not a huge fan of surnames as first names but I'm on the fence with this one.

Any other nice/alternative science-themed names you can think of?

Not a fan as it does makes me think of Edison and he was not a particularly nice person, not what I would want associated with my child.

Tesla would perhaps be a bit too much associated with the car rather than the man nowadays.

chocdog · 16/10/2017 08:42

I vote for Max Planck.

numberseven · 16/10/2017 08:57

Linnéa (it's after Carl von Linne)
Maryam (Mirzakhani)

Niels (Bohr)
Tycho (Brahe)

I'd never have phrased it the way @Kr1st1na has, (bit harsh), but she does have a point!

It's like when people call their dc Hendrix and Bowie (not because it's about honouring their hero; it's about people saying, "oh look you must be really into your music to name your child after a famous musician". James or David wouldn't get remarked on, so that wouldn't do for some parents)! It irks me as it makes the name all about the parents, rather than considering their dc who might only like classical music for example and hate Jimi Hendrix.

Anywho, re the op, I would choose the first name of a scientist you love, if you'd like to honour them. Isaac, Thomas, Marie, Ada, Alan for example.

If you aren't that bothered about the science theme and just want an interesting name which both of you love @op, I would put my energy into finding that and forget the theme.

@BrokenBattleDroid Aha- I'm too literal. Cheers.

Not a fan of Edison - makes me think Brazilian footballer not scientist though.
What about Michael (Faraday)

flumpybear · 16/10/2017 18:37

A friend called their child Darwin which is nice
Have another with isambard as their middle name

VeryPunny · 16/10/2017 18:41

Wasn’t Edison a bit of a bastard? How about Richard, after the latest UK Nobel Prize Winner? Or is that not cool enough? Tim, after the WWW inventor?

Smoliver · 16/10/2017 19:57

I like the Edison.

Boys:
Isaac (Newton)
Alexander (Graham Bell)
Leonardo (Di Vinci)
Benjamin (Franklin - or you could use Franklin!)
Edwin (Hubble)
Charles (Darwin - again, you could use Darwin if you're bold enough!)

Girls:
Rosalind (Franklin)
Marie (Curie)
Caroline (Herschel)
Mary (Anning)
Jane (Goodall)
Rita (Levi-Montalcini)

There was a Cal Berkeley entomologist who named his daughter a lovely name after a genus of insects... Might have been Vernard Lewis except his DD has a boring name like Aisha.

What about Copernicus, Aristotle, Gallileo? Give us a science to at least narrow this down.

BossyBitch · 16/10/2017 20:07

One of my colleagues has the middle name Plato.

Very unusual, but I actually sort of like it!

MaroonPencil · 16/10/2017 20:09

Edison he was a thief, and Tesla nuts beyond belief
Alexander was a gent, so philanthropic, so well meant.

Or so says Richard Thompson. I think Alexander Graham Bell may have been a bit thievey as well actually.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 16/10/2017 20:30

What about Leakey, after Richard Leakey?

NoCryLilSoftSoft · 16/10/2017 20:32

pelvic your username goes perfectly with that suggestion! Grin

littlemisscomper · 16/10/2017 20:34

My brother is Darwin. Personally I think that's cruel.

A colleague of mine had a baby boy and called him Isambard, Sam for short. He must be 5 or 6 now.

MikeUniformMike · 16/10/2017 20:48

Newton.

calamityjam · 16/10/2017 20:59

Elon? (Musk) Tyson? (Degrasse Tyson)

Choccyhobnob · 17/10/2017 09:35

I know a Mersenne. That's mathematical name though I think.

FizzyGreenWater · 17/10/2017 10:10

Isotope Rose

auntym · 17/10/2017 18:14
