Not pregnant but TTC. Just started discussing names with DH from a theoretical point of view.

I like classic, old fashioned names. We don't agree when it comes to boys names. DH has suggested Edison for a boy (as in Thomas Edison) - he's a nerd and likes the idea of a child being named after someone in the sciences.

What do you think of Edison? I'm not a huge fan of surnames as first names but I'm on the fence with this one.

Any other nice/alternative science-themed names you can think of?

Rosalind, James, Francis

You forgot Maurice. (Everyone does)

I've just remembered someone whose name could work either way round - Humphry Davy.

ReginaBlitzkreig · 15/10/2017 23:38

Tesla
John-Locke
Leibnitz (nickname Choco)

But seriously, I agree with the PP who suggested using the first name of an admired scientist. Or if a surname, Maxwell.

I suppose you could call a boy Franklin for a double whammy homage to Benjamin and poor Rosalind.

blanklook · 15/10/2017 23:49

Newton
Darwin
Hawking
Tesla
Faraday
Rutherford
Sagan
Dalton
Pascal
Marc(oni)

Maybe Joule could work? ... ahhh just realised what I said....Grin

There's another thread at the moment discussing the suitability of 'Wren' as a name - Sir Christopher was a respected scientist as well as a famous architect.

manicinsomniac · 16/10/2017 00:06

Edison was my first thought when I saw the thread title. I knew an Edison a few years ago. He was a Brazilian boy. Not sure it's a traditional Brazilian name though, I suspect there was an American influence.
I really like it personally.

DonkeyOil · 16/10/2017 00:21

Someone mentioned Edward (Jenner). What about Jenner. Think I prefer it to Edison.

nodogsinthebedroom · 16/10/2017 00:21

I'm not a huge fan of surnames as first name but Edison is actually OK.

AnyaMoondial · 16/10/2017 00:23

My DH really liked Maxwell for a boy because of James clerk maxwell and the Maxwell equations which he created which are the basis of electromagnetism (I think).

SleepingStandingUp · 16/10/2017 00:36

Leonard Sheldon would be my vote

ReginaBlitzkreig · 16/10/2017 00:48

Anya, that's the one! He was my father's scientific hero.

PeasAndHarmony · 16/10/2017 00:52

Caroline (Herschel) - Astronomer and first woman to discover a comet.

Lise (Meitner) - Nuclear Fission and radiation

Elizabeth (Garrett Anderson) - first woman to qualify as a Doctor.

Mary (Anning) - Fossil expert.

BrokenBattleDroid · 16/10/2017 05:02

donquixotedelamancha I think Leo as a homage to Galileo was just due to the last 3 letters being Leo, rather than OP thinking his first name was Leo.

BrokenBattle thanks!

Inneedofacookeddinner · 16/10/2017 07:32

Kr1st1na bit over the top-why are some people so aggressive on these boards?!

I like Edison, it's a nice twist on Edward which is quite popular but not too out there.

ChocolateCrunch · 16/10/2017 07:35

I like Edison, actually.

GonnaDrinkWater · 16/10/2017 07:47

Florence (Nightingale)

Mrsknackered · 16/10/2017 07:49

There's a very attractive character called Edison in Scandal.

IsThisTheRealYou · 16/10/2017 08:17

I think Edison is nice enough. I don't love it but there is nothing wrong with it at all. If you like it then chose it!

Tealdeal747 · 16/10/2017 08:26

Copernicus

CoteDAzur · 16/10/2017 08:28

A friend of DD’s is called Tesla. I wish I’d thought of it Envy

Oysterbabe · 16/10/2017 08:29

I like Edison and I also like Darwin and Newton.

SuperBeagle · 16/10/2017 08:30

Darwin is cool, except that it reminds me of the hot, miserable hellhole of a city in Australia.
