Thoughts? Also would you be inclined to shorten it as i don't really like Anna as a nickname?

My DD's middle name is Annaliese. Love it!

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 15/10/2017 22:14

I immediately thought of the pretty blonde girl in Neighbours.
I don't dislike the name- pretty neutral tbh.

OooohHorlicks · 15/10/2017 22:17

Lovely name. I know an Annalise. Her family call her Annie but friends tend to use her full name. She is one of the most sweet-natured people I know.

forestred · 15/10/2017 22:22

so is Annalise pronounced Anna-lees or Anna-leez-uh Blush Very confused!

cedoran No - my immediate thought was - 'oh, from Neighbours?'

CauliflowerSqueeze · 15/10/2017 22:27

We had a girl at school called Annalise. It was pronounced Anna-leez. I’m not sure which I prefer between that and Anna-lees. Both pretty!

Bue · 15/10/2017 22:29

Seriously considered Anneliese for DD after my great aunt. NN would have been Liesl, which is an option if you're going for Euro/Germanic vibe. Or if you're a massive Sound of Music fan!

Bue · 15/10/2017 22:38

Forgot to say it is technically pronounced Anna-lee-zuh but I don't think you need to use that pronunciation for an English speaking child. The only one I currently know is pronounced Anna-leez.

chocatoo · 15/10/2017 22:42

I like it. Suitable for a child and an adult. So many of the suggestions on here I just feel so sorry for the poor child!

Roxx1516 · 15/10/2017 22:47

Anal lice, Annalise

Ohyesiam · 15/10/2017 23:09

Very pretty name. Never heard the uh sound on the end version.
My friend Annaliese goes by Lissy , which really suits her.
I think Annaliese means gift from God. Which, even though in not religious, I somehow like, as our children do feel like such gifts.

junglebookisthebest · 16/10/2017 10:33

Well I never knew that my name is being pronounced wrong - I am Annaliese and have always been called 'Anna-Lees' (Like the girl in Neighbours!)
Yes when I speak to people they will ask me how my name is spelt but its never struck me as a problem - surely lots of names are like that - Stephen/Steven, Catherine/Kathryn, Susanna/Suzannah etc.
Just go for a name you like the sound of, choose a spelling you like and tell people how its pronounced.
As for nicknames - you can never control that. They are affectionate, develop organically and as your child grows up he/she will decide for themselves what they want to be known as. I've actually never had a nickname, certainly no one has assumed they can call me Anna, till I met my partner and its a play on my surname rather than my first name.

Minimoan · 16/10/2017 19:19

This is one of my first names and I have always loved it. Never met another person with the same name as a child (decades ago and pre-'Neighbours' character of same name!), and very seldom do now. It was never shortened by anyone at all, and get lots of compliments on my name, but do always have to spell it out to strangers/on the phone!

Re. pronunciation:
'Anneliese' is the original German spelling where the 'e' is pronounced as a 'a' (e.g. 'Anna - leez - a').
'Annalise' is pronounced 'Anna - leez'.

It means both 'full of grace' and 'God is bountiful'.

Hope that helps!

UsernameInvalid66 · 17/10/2017 18:24

I like it pronounced "Anna-leez" but not "Anna-leece" if that makes any sense. I think you'd be more likely to get Annie as a shortening than Anna, as people are more likely to think of Anna as a full name in its own right.

MikeUniformMike · 17/10/2017 21:25

How about Annie as a shorter version instead of Anna?

harrietm87 · 19/10/2017 12:48

Annaliese is pronounced anna-lee-ze. Lovely name. The one I know is nn Annie.
