Does everyone instantly think of Madeline McCann when hearing the name Madeline? And is that a bad thing?
My husband really likes the name Maddie, and it is growing on me but it feels more like a nickname...

Yes, think of McCann but it is really cute. Once she is named people will forget the name association.

baby410 · 02/10/2017 13:54

I think it's only bad if it bothers you. It was my first choice name but my husband said it always makes him think of Maddie McCann and that put him off. I didn't push it because I don't think it's fair to give his daughter a name that reminds him of something awful.

2014newme · 02/10/2017 13:56

Yes sorry

Winterc00kie · 02/10/2017 13:57

When people say the name Madeline you hear Machan, before that though it used to make me think of the cartoon madeline xx

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 02/10/2017 14:02

No, my dd's best friend is called Madeline, but she is in her 20s.

If you love it, use it.

ItStartedWithAKiss241 · 02/10/2017 14:03

I really liked this name for my 3 year old but our surname also begins with "Mc" so the Mccann association put me off also x

Sophronia · 02/10/2017 14:10

Yes, it makes me think of Madeleine McCann.

mumof06darlings · 02/10/2017 14:12

Another one here who thinks of Madeline mccann

whinetime89 · 02/10/2017 14:12

i have a Madeline/Maddie. Suits her to a T 😁

StarStruK · 02/10/2017 14:13

What about just Maddie? Do think that's a name in its own right?

Prefer Madeleine spelling. Yes it's the name of a little girl who went missing 10 years ago which is awful but why should that put people off in her name? She was an innocent little girl not a mass murderer!

It was at the top of our list for the DD I was carrying when Madeline McCann disappeared. It's a beautiful name and I still love it. But, I'm incredibly relieved I took the "overly hormonal" decision, as DH called it at the time, not to use it.

Firsttimemama2017 · 02/10/2017 19:00

It was one of my final two names for my daughter but everyone I told I was considering it referred to Madeleine McCann and it put me off! I love Maddie as a nickname. Would you consider Madison?

Threeandabit · 02/10/2017 21:43

Yes it does.

SunFinished · 02/10/2017 21:46

How about Madison or Matilda nn Maddie?

Readytomakechanges · 02/10/2017 21:51

How are you pronouncing it?

I love the Mad-eh-lie-n pronunciation, which is a bit of a separation from Mad-a-lin Mccaan.

Froglette16 · 02/10/2017 21:55

Just do what you feel is true

SuperBeagle · 02/10/2017 22:01

I would pronounce Madeline differently to Madeleine (McCann). I'd pronounce Madeline as mad-eh-LINE, line rhyming with wine. That's how it's pronounced in the Keats poem, and how it's pronounced in the books/TV show Madeline.

Madeleine doesn't make me think of McCann though, probably because I'm not in the UK.

pipilangstrumpf · 02/10/2017 22:03

Me too, I’d pronounce
Madeleine as ma-de-LAINE
Madeline as Ma-de-LINE

pipilangstrumpf · 02/10/2017 22:03

But I don’t like Maddie, it sounds too mad

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 02/10/2017 22:06

Its a beautiful name. Once it's the name of a child you know the associations become all about that child. Its a bit like when you first hear a really unusual name and at first you might think it odd but once you know the person, it just becomes their name.

Such a lovely name though and was on our list. It's my SILS favourite name though and she told me once in confidence that she dreams of a little girl called Maddie so I didn't feel I could use it.

MollyHuaCha · 02/10/2017 22:29

Nice name.

StarStruK · 03/10/2017 08:32

I hadn't thought much about the different pronunciations to be honest, I initially thought Mad-a-lin but I'll have a look at other pronunciations (and spellings!) Thanks everyone!

I think McCann when I hear that name.
