Hello, strongly considering this as a name but unsure of which spelling would be better - Effie or Effy? Xx

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
PandorasXbox · 20/09/2017 15:10

Sorry to be blunt but either way you spell it it's still awful.

Coconutspongexo · 20/09/2017 15:14

Are you using it as a nickname?
Effy looks better

CarlHickbread · 20/09/2017 15:14

I have an Effie so I'm bias to that spelling.

She always gets compliments on her name too Smile

MazDazzle · 20/09/2017 15:21

Effie

Chaffinch4 · 20/09/2017 15:44

I think Effie looks better as a full name. Not sure why though! I think that's the more common spelling too.

NotAgainYoda · 20/09/2017 15:58

Effie

It does seem like a nickname though

BishopBrennansArse · 20/09/2017 15:59

ie

lottieandmia · 20/09/2017 16:01

Effie as a full name? I personally would not put that on the birth certificate. It's usually a NN for Euphemia.

loveinanelevator · 20/09/2017 16:13

Hunger games?

Chaffinch4 · 20/09/2017 16:15

Given that there were 138 Effies in 2016 and only 3 Euphemism, I'd say Effie is a name in it's own right now. Just like Ellie is used as a name in it's own right.

Coconutspongexo · 20/09/2017 16:16

The Effys I know are Elizabeth's. (I only know 2 personally and know one other)

17caterpillars1mouse · 20/09/2017 16:17

Effie looks more complete to me

lottieandmia · 20/09/2017 16:17

Well Kate is also used as an actual name but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be better to put Katherine on the birth certificate.

NotAgainYoda · 20/09/2017 16:18

Could be short for Euphemism

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 20/09/2017 16:19

Effie.

Chaffinch4 · 20/09/2017 16:20

That's down to personal preference though. I don't like Euphemia or Elizabeth at all so would not want those on the birth certificate, especially if I never planned to call her that. Effie is much nicer.

Yourshakraishangingout · 20/09/2017 16:26

My daughter is Effie but it's a nickname for Evelyn. I think it's a wonderful name but be prepared for some unnecessary mumsnet nastiness about it :) I've never encountered any in real life though

NotAgainYoda · 20/09/2017 16:28

yourshakra

Evelyn is lovely, and Effie as more uncommon than Eve or Evie

Elvie is nice too

AdalindSchade · 20/09/2017 16:29

Effie

MammieBear · 20/09/2017 16:34

It's the name of a character on the hunger games, it's OK as a name with names like Hattie I don't see why not... Euphemia is the original full form it means well spoken

Yourshakraishangingout · 20/09/2017 16:35

Thank you NotAgainYoda that was our thinking too :)

caroltune · 20/09/2017 16:35

will probably use a longer full name

OP posts:
lottieandmia · 20/09/2017 17:09

All the Hatties I know are Harriet. I think if you plan to use a NN that's absolutely fine but the child is going to grow up and may wish to use a more formal name sometimes depending on circumstances. It just allows more choice to have a more formal name on the birth certificate.

Jooni · 20/09/2017 17:19

I'd go with Effie as it seems to be the predominant spelling.

If you want to use a longer form then do, but honestly, if you like Effie as a full name then go for it. MN is obsessed with needing a "proper" name on the BC but nickname names are very popular at the moment and perfectly legitimate as full names for the most part. Effie is nice on its own.

NinonDeLenclos · 20/09/2017 17:25

Awful either way. Edwardian maid.

Is it short for Ephigenia?
