I really love the name Ada, it seems to be the only name where I can actually picture myself with a daughter of that name.

However I have made the mistake of telling family/friends this and have now had two separate people tell me I can't call her that because it makes them think of Adolf Hitler?!! And WW2.. Why?! It's really annoyed me and I hate that people can be so opinionated when it comes to what you're going to call 'YOUR' child. Can I over look this.. or is the name now ruined?
Sorry for the rant!!

I know a little Ada. She is very cute.
No way would the name make me think of Hitler!

lightgreenglass · 17/09/2017 22:22

My family ripped my DS1 name to piece when I first told them what he was going to be called. Now, they love it and can't imagine him being called anything else.

You name her whatever you want to name her.

Floellabella · 17/09/2017 22:24

It's lovely and no one else will think of Hitler x

NameChange30 · 17/09/2017 22:24

And this is why you should never tell people in real life your shortlisted name(s)!

They are being idiots. Ada is a brilliant name. It makes me think of Ada Lovelace who is a good namesake. But to be honest once you know someone with a name you learn to associate it with them and nothing else.

SuperBeagle · 17/09/2017 22:25

I can only see Ada reminding someone of Adolf if they were American, as Americans pronounce Adolf with the long "ay" sound that is the same as the first syllable of Ada. But this won't be a problem in other countries, as the two are pronounced differently.

Ada makes me think of Ada Lovelace.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 17/09/2017 22:25

Not Adolf at all!

For me it is Les Dawson in a dress, hoicking up his bosoms Blush. That may be a generational thing however - peers of any little Ada born nowadays would never make the same connection!

Tilapia · 17/09/2017 22:25

I would also think of Ada Lovelace. And definitely not Hitler!?

tigerdriverII · 17/09/2017 22:26

Are they muddling it up with Eva?Confused

SirNiallDementia · 17/09/2017 22:27

Ada sounds nothing like Adolf???

Like Aiden or Auden maybe but not Adolf.

Call your baby whatever you like and ignore everyone else's opinions!

donkey86 · 17/09/2017 22:28

Makes me think of the song Ada by The National. It'll be stuck in my head now!

holidayqueriwifi · 17/09/2017 22:28

Personally not a fan of Ada BUT my opinion is nothing to do with Hitler or any WW2 refs! Never heard of those links. Just prefer more classic than fashionable names. If you like it, use it.

LostwithSawyer · 17/09/2017 22:28

It's very nice. WW2 ?? Hmm possibly because it's old but no idea why hitler would be thought of.
I don't think of Hitler when I hear Eva.

Garlicansapphire · 17/09/2017 22:29

Yup Les Dawson... crabby old bag.

oliversax · 17/09/2017 22:30

No idea why it might remind you of Hitler. It's my grans friend, a beautiful name & Ada Lovelace.

DerelictWreck · 17/09/2017 22:31

Makes me think of Ada Lovelace too!

I think it's a beautiful name OP, and nothing to do with Adolf at all. Honestly can't understand the connection, and I'm a historian!

TillyTheTiger · 17/09/2017 22:31

I think of Ada Clare in Charles Dicken's Bleak House - lovely character, beautiful name

orecchietti · 17/09/2017 22:31

That's so weird. Agree with pp that it only makes any sense at all if they're Americans but even then it makes v little sense! I think Ada is a lovely name, and I'm sure they will once they associate it with your daughter - I wouldn't give their nonsense a second thought!

LapCatLicker · 17/09/2017 22:34

Wasn't nicole kidman's character in Cold Mountain an Ada? I loved that film. It's a lovely name.

igotyoubabe · 17/09/2017 22:35

Ah thanks everyone, needed to hear this! I think it's because it's a German name? I don't know.. it is weird. Just annoying that naming a child seems to be the only time when people you know feel it necessary to have an opinion and rudely express it.. Won't be making the same mistake again!

Nice name.

lljkk · 17/09/2017 22:37

Ada in the movie The Piano.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 17/09/2017 22:38

Another one for Ada Lovelace. Brilliant person to be named after.

For Ada fans on the thread: The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace & Babbage. It's bloody brilliant.

user1471495191 · 17/09/2017 22:40

I presume it's because Hitler's partner/wife was called Eva Braun (pronounced A-va). That's a bit of a stretch to Ada though!

RedLemonade · 17/09/2017 22:41

Yep. Ada Lovelace. Great name.

DuggeeHugs · 17/09/2017 22:49

Ada Lovelace. We love this name and very nearly gave it to DD, but she just didn't look like an Ada.
