What does this name make you think of?

I really love the name Ada, it seems to be the only name where I can actually picture myself with a daughter of that name.

However I have made the mistake of telling family/friends this and have now had two separate people tell me I can't call her that because it makes them think of Adolf Hitler?!! And WW2.. Why?! It's really annoyed me and I hate that people can be so opinionated when it comes to what you're going to call 'YOUR' child. Can I over look this.. or is the name now ruined?
Sorry for the rant!!

My DGM's washing machine was an Ada, they were made in the 1960's and were very well-made machines, apparently. She loved it.

Apart from that, I've never known an Ada IRL, but it makes me think of old ladies with lace-edged fine lawn handkerchiefs... no idea why!

If you like it, go for it. Whatever name you choose, there will always be someone who picks fault with it. As long as you love it and it isn't a ridiculous name (which Ada certainly isn't!) don't worry about what other people think!

BewareOfDragons · 17/09/2017 23:00

We have a lovely Scandinavian niece called Ada. I think it's a beautiful name.

Justgivemesomepeace · 17/09/2017 23:08

Reminds me of Les Dawson and Roy Barraclough's Cissy and Ada. I know a little Ayda but I can't get past The 2 old women hoisting their bossoms over the yard wall.

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 17/09/2017 23:14

Ada to me is both traditional and beautiful o

Pansiesandredrosesandmarigolds · 17/09/2017 23:17

This.

Not Hitler.

Carouselfish · 18/09/2017 00:04

LapCat Yes! That's what I thought of first. Miss Ada Monroe.

RosemaryHoight · 18/09/2017 00:13

Hitlers girlfriend was Eva Braun. Not Ada.

Ada is a very nice name.

Your daughter will have her own personality which will define her name. Even if you called her Eva after Hitler's girlfriend I'm sure she would make her own connotations.

But don't say she's called Eva after Hitler's girlfriend.

GreenSpaghetti · 18/09/2017 00:22

Ada Doom and her woodshed. Love the name tho

Ttbb · 18/09/2017 00:31

Would not in a million years connect it with hitler. Does make me think of that annoying song though, the one that goes aaaaayyyydaaaa oh ho ayda

Pallisers · 18/09/2017 00:33

Don't tell people the name!

I think of a story called "Ada's Flowers" which was in my book of fairy tales - I think it is by Hans Christian Andersen

MercianQueen · 18/09/2017 00:42

It makes me think of my incredibly strong grandma Ada, who died almost 10 years ago aged 93. And of Ada Lovelace - 'nuff said. I don't have children, but if if I did, the daughter would be Ada. Stunning name, please use it 😊

LoveDeathPrizes · 18/09/2017 01:06

It's beautiful. Adeline or Adelaide also a possiblity.

Shadow666 · 18/09/2017 01:36

I think it's a lovely name. It reminds me of Robbie Williams for some reason. Is his wife Ada?

Shadow666 · 18/09/2017 01:37

Ok, I checked his wife is Ayda. Just ignore me Blush

HeteronormativeHaybales · 18/09/2017 01:54

I agree, it's the association with Eva Braun. But considering there are lots of little girls happily called Eve/Eva, I think it's a ridiculous objection and one you're not likely to encounter otheriwse. Ada itself is/sounds nothing like Adolf. Do you have family/friends called Fawlty, by any chance? For me, Ada is a pretty, retro (or vintage) name, quite a 20s feel. Go for it :)

DiegoMadonna · 18/09/2017 01:55

It's one of my favourite girls names

Cavender · 18/09/2017 01:57

It's a perfectly nice name, no bad connotations at all.

Ignore your odd friends!

hophop333 · 18/09/2017 06:56

In no way does it resemble Hitler. However, I do think it's quite a harsh, masculine name. Though may not help that the two people I've known with this name have been very butch.

emwithme · 18/09/2017 07:03

My Gran (and Great-Aunt Ida) had a friend called Ada (not Asda, which my phone auto-corrected it to). I didn't like Ada (she was very two-faced and didn't have a nice word to say about you if you weren't there).

Other than her, I then think of Ada Lovelace (who I didn't know until Saturday was Lord Byron's daughter).

Bluntness100 · 18/09/2017 07:07

Are they maybe a little confused and don't know the name of Hitler's girlfriend? If so, I'd definitely not listen to them.

I think it's a nice name too,

stellarfox · 18/09/2017 07:42

They must be thinking of Eva. I love Ada - it was my great grandmothers name!

lostworkerbee · 18/09/2017 08:30

They may be thinking of the author Ada Petrova, who wrote the death of Hitler? Not a connection that would put me off using it - it is a lovely name.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 18/09/2017 08:32

People will always put their spoke in.😡
It's a lovely name, don't let them put you off !

Lweji · 18/09/2017 08:35

Those 2 people need to have their heads examined.

If anything, Eva would, but I've never seen anyone connect the two.

Jooni · 18/09/2017 17:51

They're being ridiculous. Ada is lovely. My friend has one, she's gorgeous and suits it perfectly, and the name gets lots of compliments.

Reminds me of Ada Lovelace (great connection!) and Ada from Peaky Blinders, who's a nice character.
