Esme - what comes to mind when you think of this name? How would you describe the name?

OP, I appologise, there is so much prejudice !
As I said before, Esme is lovely.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 17/09/2017 19:10

A pudgy old lady with a blanket.

CaoNiMartacus · 17/09/2017 20:25

It makes me think of J D Salinger's short story "For Esme, with Love and Squalor". Good story. Nice name.

Beeziekn33ze · 17/09/2017 21:41

Love it, prefer Esmé (Ez-may)

iklboo · 17/09/2017 21:44

Granny Weatherwax from Terry Pratchett. Very strong woman who knows her own mind (and everybody else's).

RJnomore1 · 17/09/2017 21:46

Twilight

I personally don't like it. There's something in it that sounds harsh to me in a Scottish accent. But there's nothing wrong with it and I wouldn't think anything of someone else calling their child it.

Mamabear4180 · 17/09/2017 21:49

I think of the mum as being a bit punky/tomboyish. I don't see it as a 'girly' girls name. I prefer it spelt Esmae even though it's not supposed to be just to pretty it up. I like the nickname Ezzie a lot.

Dionysus78 · 17/09/2017 21:52

It's a pretty common name amongst little girls where I live. Not sure why. Nice name, though.

rosybell · 17/09/2017 21:57

Really common round here too (south east). But it is a lovely name. Just please don't spell it esmai like my colleague..

Onetedisbackinbed · 17/09/2017 22:00

I like it, not unusual now though. I know an adult esme, it was unusual for her

LivLemler · 17/09/2017 22:34

I think of an old woman in a flowery tabard with Dame Edna glasses!

Did you watch the Aussie soap A Country Practice? Pretty sure there was an Esme in that matching this description. It's what I always think of when I hear the name.

ScarletForYa · 17/09/2017 22:47

LivLemler

That sounds familiar and the Aussie thing is ringing a bell too!

llangennith · 17/09/2017 23:11

Started getting popular again about 10 years ago here in South Wales.
I had an Aunt Esme who'd be 90 now.

Borntoflyinfirst · 18/09/2017 05:52

I know a 12 year old called Esme

mogulfield · 18/09/2017 05:56

An old lady with dimentia (sorry Op but that's the only Esme I know), so the name makes me feel very sad.
Obviously don't let this put you off, if you like a name go for it, 100 people could give you a reason not to.

BikeRunSki · 18/09/2017 06:01

Horrible girl at school.

Esme Weatherwax from the Terry Pratchett books. Great name!

MrsCharlieD · 18/09/2017 12:10

Twilight. Can't say I'm a lover of it. I know 5 as well, all under 3!

kaytee87 · 18/09/2017 12:25

Twilight

SirNiallDementia · 18/09/2017 12:29

It's become really popular here, there's 3 at DS nursery.

And people can't seem to work out how to pronounce it - 2 of the girls are Ez-may and one is Ez-mee.

Pretty name though!

Paddingtonthebear · 18/09/2017 19:27

It's not unusual! Not round here anyway. Two at nursery and two in one reception class alone

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 18/09/2017 19:46

Beautiful
Also Esme Squalor from A Series of Unfortunate Events

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 18/09/2017 19:48

OP maybe you're thinking Gypsy because of Esmeralda ( as in Hunchback of Norte Dame ) x
