We love old fashioned names and we love the name Isambard for a boy but are worried it's a little too out there! Thoughts/opinions please!!! Smile

We almost named DS that. Would you be thinking of Brunel?

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/09/2017 14:38

A lot of engineers in the family? Grin

What will you shorten it to?

ISaySteadyOn · 09/09/2017 14:40

I should add though that the Mumsnet test of seeing how the name sounds when you add the phrase 'put down that brick!' really helps.

Curtainsider · 09/09/2017 14:42

I prefer Thomas Telford.

velvetcake · 09/09/2017 14:43

Lol!!! We do have a lot of engineers actually! This is why I'm worried and not sure about it! DH likes Bard for short, I'm just not sure!

I love Isambard. It was on our list. I say go for it. Personally prefer the nickname "Sam" to "Izzy"!

Curtainsider · 09/09/2017 14:44

Isa for short.

MrsHathaway · 09/09/2017 14:45

FOAF has an Isambard known as Bardy.

It's a bit try-hard but if you're engineers it's also extremely cool Grin

Curtainsider · 09/09/2017 14:45

Actually I like it but then I'm into engineering.

viques · 09/09/2017 14:47

Go for it, I found out yesterday that the K in Jerome K Jeromes name stands for Klapka. And the S in WS Gilbert is Schwenck.

After them Isambard is practically boring!

OublietteBravo · 09/09/2017 14:47

I like it.

Can I interest you in Erasmus? I really like it (but I'm not having any more children).

Curtainsider · 09/09/2017 14:48

Appolodorus of Damascus?

viques · 09/09/2017 14:49

bard for short please not if your surname is Simpson.

endehors · 09/09/2017 14:50

Someone posted about Isambard fairly recently

here

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/09/2017 15:00

Bard, Issy and Bardy as NNs are all very posh sounding. Which is fine if you live in a leafy suburb and he never moves anywhere more... interesting. But Sam is good and could work.

My rule is; with that name, could they collect rubbish and run the Hadrom Collider? So Dr. Isambard Smith could run the Hadron Collider but could Bardy/Issy Smith collect rubbish? Probably not.

bridgetreilly · 09/09/2017 15:22

Love it! Especially with Bard for short. Go for it!

endehors · 09/09/2017 15:26

Bardy sounds like Bawdy Grin

PinkDonuts · 09/09/2017 19:12

I'm not personally a fan of the name, but of course it is entirely your choice and if you like it, then go for it.

For nicknames, I would go with Sam. Bard sounds like Bart to me, unless of course you like that name, or Bartholomew. Best of luck!

Violetparis · 09/09/2017 19:18

Sounds ridiculous to me but if you live somewhere posh you might get away with it.

MammieBear · 09/09/2017 19:22

Very "out there" but I think that's part of it's appeal.

Sequence · 10/09/2017 00:31

Very cool and industrial! I like it 🙂

mathanxiety · 10/09/2017 05:19

Love it.

stellarfox · 10/09/2017 06:54

I really like it but it is unusual so I don't though I would personally use it as a first name. If you like it go for it!

Pansiesandredrosesandmarigolds · 10/09/2017 06:58

It's mad as fuck, but I love it and Bard is a good nn.

Usual caveat (maybe because I'm a coward) give the kid a solid middle name to revert to - James rather than Kingdom.

Having said that there's more chance of another Isambard in his primary school class than another Philip.

grufallosfriend · 10/09/2017 07:21

Why couldn't a Bard Smith collect rubbish Hmm?

I think Isambard is a fantastic name. Cool, classic and not overused. But easy to spell and pronounced. What's not to like?
