What do you think of name Solace?
And is it better for a boy or girl?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

God no.

You may as well call her Lonlieness or Grief.

Lemondrop99 · 08/09/2017 13:13

Initially I thought it might be ok for a girl. I don't think the meaning is particularly horrible, it indicates something positive is an otherwise sad situation.

But when someone above mentioned Soul-less, it put me off. If you saw the name written down, fine. But when she introduces herself verbally, I think it could easily be misheard as Soul-less, which wouldn't be nice.

NC4now · 08/09/2017 13:19

It makes me think of Sorrow. I think if you are going for the comfort, reassurance type vibe, I'd look for something more along the lines of Hope.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 08/09/2017 13:20

No, it's the opposite of Loneliness and Grief.
Whether you like it or not, it doesn't mean these things.

BroomstickOfLove · 08/09/2017 13:26

But solace can only be found in a bad situation. Comfort can stand alone, as a pleasant thing. Comfort is sort of snuggly, whereas solace is more austere, and somehow bleak.

Primulas · 08/09/2017 13:28

That's like saying 'Charity? You may as well call her Poverty'
Solace combats Loneliness or Grief.

inuinnit · 08/09/2017 14:07

It's really not my cup of tea tbh.

I think the meaning makes you think of sadness, even if it is assuaging sadness. It is also kind of outward looking - i.e. it's something you give to someone else who is sad, rather than a virtue that you have in and of yourself. I don't like 'comfort' as a name for same reason. 'Charity' is a bit better because you can imagine a happy little girl who has never known sadness being charitable.

"Blessing" has a similar meaning without the negatives and there are lots of names that mean blessing. "Hope" and "Joy" also similar without making you think necessarily of sadness.

TheLegendOfBeans · 08/09/2017 14:14

#mybad

Maybe I've just got a problem with any "virtue" name; except Hope (for some reason).

Sophronia · 08/09/2017 14:27

I actually like it, but I think it would be better as a middle name.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 08/09/2017 14:29

Sorry, but why the hashtag?
Am I on the wrong website?

Fevertree · 08/09/2017 14:39

I actually really like it, both the sound and the meaning. For me it suits a girl more than a boy. Beautiful name.

TheLegendOfBeans · 08/09/2017 16:31

Fucking hell Chardonnay I'm trying to be humble and light at the same time.

Jesus.

MadameJosephine · 08/09/2017 22:52

I actually really like it, but I do love most virtue names. I love Prudence, Clemency, Temperance, I think the only ones I dislike are Charity and Chastity

notangelinajolie · 08/09/2017 22:53

Just no.

Shankarankalina · 08/09/2017 22:53

How about Soleil (sunlight)?

Liadain · 09/09/2017 09:47

No. It does put me in mind of sadness, even if it's about comfort. It strikes me as a name that might be given as a middle name for a baby after the parents struggled to conceive, or even a name for a stillborn baby. Not quite sure why that springs to mind, but there you go.

Lalala2018 · 18/04/2018 23:27

I called my daughter Solace I think its lovely and the meaning was the reason along with the fact it is unique and timeless sold it to me.

Thistles24 · 18/04/2018 23:44

Any Scottish connection? Solas is the Scottish Gaelic for 'light' which is much more positive but sounds very similar.

Pannacott · 18/04/2018 23:46

Too sad. Would always make me think of bereavement, death, loss, grief.

Atticusss · 18/04/2018 23:51

Oh, I love it. I think it could work for girl or bog equally. Sol works as a nickname, I know a Sol and a Solomon shorterned to Sol so I'm thinking it works slightly better for a boy. It sounds comforting and calm to me but a nice strong name.

FartnissEverbeans · 20/04/2018 18:01

I think it's alright actually.

How about:

Solenne
Serenity
Liberty

I like the sound of it as a name, but it does have a hint of sadness to it. I still think it's nice though. Quite a grown up name.

As others have suggested, there's also Soleil which means sunshine, and I've also come across a, I think, Spanish variant Soleida (Sol-ey-da) which means the same thing.
