What do you think of name Solace?
And is it better for a boy or girl?

Girl. If you have to.

helly29 · 08/09/2017 10:35

Girl. But it's pretty sad! If it's personally important I'd say better as a middle name.

TheWeeWitch · 08/09/2017 10:50

It's ok as a name/word - sounds nice etc. But the meaning...? Confused

Solace
Flippetydip · 08/09/2017 10:51

Go for Solero instead

Ikabod · 08/09/2017 11:01

I really don't think Solace works as a name, because of the meaning. Is it the way it sounds that you particularly like, or something about the meaning that strikes you?

MrsEricBana · 08/09/2017 11:03

I'm sorry but I don't like it but girl not boy for me.

GahBuggerit · 08/09/2017 11:05

No.

SlugKiller · 08/09/2017 11:06

It's not a very nice meaning. Maybe Sollis instead?

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 08/09/2017 11:09

If i read it I would asume it was Solange misspelt.

Other than that - there are plenty of similar meaning names in some cultures... Patience, Mercy, Consuelo... personally I feel it doesn't roll off the tongue but that is very subjective.

BroomstickOfLove · 08/09/2017 11:10

Girl, but I think it's a name that I associate with a child born to grieving parents, and I think that attracts speculation about the family's circumstances and puts an unfair burden on the child if it is the case.

daisypond · 08/09/2017 11:19

I think it's nice. I know someone called Comfort, which has the same meaning, but a nicer sound to my ears.

daisypond · 08/09/2017 11:20

I mean, Solace has a nicer sound.

ChocolateCrunch · 08/09/2017 11:24

Sounds too sad to me for a name, sorry. I do know a boy named Sol though, if you like the first sound. It's not short for Solomon in his case, just a name in its own right.

pear123 · 08/09/2017 11:38

Well its the meaning that I'm interested in..
My mother in-laws first name is comfort, So I don't feel I can't use this as it will likely cause upset with my mother. I really liked the name Solace for the meaning to comfort or console. I also I thought it was quite a strong name too, not to dainty. A name a child could make their own, wether they are loud and an extrovert or quiet and shy, but also holds a lot of meaning for me and husband. I just wanted opinions . We're still deciding anyway.

I'm going to go against the grain and day I've like both the sound and the meaning. Personally I prefer well known, traditional names, but if you prefer something available but different then I think this name is nice.

nodogsinthebedroom · 08/09/2017 11:47

Say not day

nodogsinthebedroom · 08/09/2017 11:49

Bloody hell so many typos

I'm going to go against the grain and say I like both the sound and the meaning. Personally I prefer well known/traditional names but if you prefer something a bit different then I think this name is nice.

Ankleswingers · 08/09/2017 11:52

Really??

I think it's ridiculous.

Sorry.

villamariavintrapp · 08/09/2017 11:54

Sounds like soul-less to me.

Mrsknackered · 08/09/2017 11:55

I strangely like it (for a girl)

Much prefer Soren for a boy.

PatriciaHolm · 08/09/2017 11:55

" Quantum of" is my first thought.

Giraffey1 · 08/09/2017 11:58

I was going to say you could have a boy and call him Quantum ....
Personally, I don't like the name Solace ....

daisypond · 08/09/2017 12:10

I don't see why Solace is ridiculous. Virtue names for girls, like, Prudence, Charity, Verity, Felicity, Hope, Faith, Grace, Honor, Mercy, Joy, etc, are rather in fashion at the moment and have been completely normal for centuries.

nodogsinthebedroom · 08/09/2017 12:17

And I would say it is more suited to a girl, as these sorts of virtue names usually are in British culture at least (for sexist reasons tbh, but that's another thread!).

SumAndSubstance · 08/09/2017 13:08

I quite like it. I don't see why people think it's a horrible meaning - Solace is a good thing! I don't see why it's wildly different from Hope or Mercy in terms of its cheerfulness, and as you say, Comfort is used as a name.
I also think it sounds nice, but I would agree virtue names are traditionally feminine, so I think people would assume 'Solace' to be a girl.
