Could you give me a quick guesstimate on how popular Clara is?

I really like

Clara
Margot
Martha

However - thought Margot and Martha may be making a comeback, but what about Clara?

My other two DC have similar style names - not too kitsch (in my opinion), not too popular, and not too 'nana'.

Any other names gladly received! Thank you

They're all gorgeous names. I know two Claras, three Marthas and one Margot.

Leicesterpiggott · 01/09/2017 20:20

Clara is super common here...(midlands). As is Martha. Don't know any Margots though. That's lovely.

Chaffinch4 · 01/09/2017 20:22

Mabel and Clara are such lovely names together.

Personally I'd avoid two 'm' names, although I do like Martha a lot. I like Margot too but can't get over it looking like maggot...

Theseaweed · 01/09/2017 20:23

I know a few young Claras and Marthas but no Margots.

Not keen on any of them and watch out for Clara being pronounced as Claire ra in the some parts.

Ledehe · 01/09/2017 20:25

I have a Clara. Only heard of one more here. Everyone loves her name when they hear it

ShowPineapple · 01/09/2017 20:27

Clara was on the shortlist for my dd and would use it in the future. I like all your names but 2 M' s might mean people opening post that's not for them in the future!

mistermagpie · 01/09/2017 20:28

I like Clara! I have never met a single one in my life.

I do know a couple of baby Martha's though so it might be a bit more popular?

BalconyBunting · 01/09/2017 20:28

I love Clara because of Clara Bow and the film "It". I do think an M name like Margot or Martha along with your Mabel sounds a bit matchy matchy, like you wanted twins?

Btw are you pronouncing Clara the English way (Clare-uh) or European way (Clah-ruh)?

redrobinblue · 01/09/2017 20:42

@BalconyBunting it would be Clah-rah but didn't realise this was a European pronunciation. My DM's aunt Clara was the inspiration.

Would that come across as a bit fancy? (We are very English)

I know one Clara (27) and it's pronounced clah-ruh - I'm south UK. Love the name. Agree it's getting more well known but not super popular, much like Mabel. Really like Margot - I think of Margot Robbie, but I'm not keen on how it looks on paper. Martha is nice. I think Clara goes better with Mabel as not another Ma- name but they are all lovely names!

Batteriesallgone · 01/09/2017 20:48

I'm westcountry raised, I'd pronounce it Clah-rah. Never heard the Claire-uh way of pronouncing it. Is that a north / south thing maybe?

AccrualIntentions · 01/09/2017 20:49

I'd class Clah-ruh as the English way now. Claire-uh is the way Americans would tend to pronounce it but that's pretty much it.

Sophronia · 01/09/2017 20:55

I think Clara is going to become very popular.

Ledehe · 01/09/2017 22:40

Clah-rah is the way we pronounce it. The only person who has said it Claire-ah was a canadian

ScarletSienna · 02/09/2017 07:50

I've never met any (have taught for many years and have a toddler so know lots of children!) and I really like it.

I know 2 Marthas and no Margots.

MotherofPearl · 02/09/2017 09:49

I know one Clara and she's 9.

emilybrontescorset · 02/09/2017 09:51

I love Clara and don't know any.
My dh didn't like it though.

insancerre · 02/09/2017 09:51

I've worked with children for 15 years and have only ever had one Martha. No Claras or Margots

WhyOhWine · 02/09/2017 09:57

I have a friend Clara pronounced like Sarah. I prefer the Zara pronunciation though and think that is much more common. In fact I was not aware it could be pronounced like Sarah before I met my friend.

Copperspot · 02/09/2017 09:59

I know 1 Clara aged 5, no Margots and 1 Martha aged 19. I really like them all but if i had to pick i would choose Margot. I think it's a beautiful name

Marcipex · 03/09/2017 13:29

I know one little Clara, but I've heard people guess the Claire-uh pronunciation.
Clara to rhyme with Zara is nice.

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 03/09/2017 13:36

I know a couple in their teens. I reckon it's on the up partly thanks to the Doctor Who connection bringing it to mind (Amelia got a huge boost) and will be solidly top 100 though not top 10 for the next decade (Doctor Who Clara will fade from memory but baby names trends are self-reinforcing). So it won't be everywhere. She won't be the only one in her school but will probably be the only one in her class.

redrobinblue · 03/09/2017 13:49

@WinterIsComingKnitFaster am not a Dr Who fan - so didn't get this connection! Thank hou

Very!!!! I know 6 under the age of 3

Frazzled2207 · 03/09/2017 13:54

Love all three but if you have a Mabel already then Clara gets a definite vote.
Also Martha might be pronounced Marfa depending on where you are in the UK.
