Would you call your daughter Ivy if your name was Holly?

Other half set on the name Ivy for our daughter, but my name is Holly.

Worried we'll be inundated with mentions of the Christmas carol for life. But he says I am just being silly...

Thoughts?

DH tried to talk me into similar with our new baby. Not holly and ivy but a v famous couple. No no no.

Piratesandpants · 30/08/2017 14:01

No

BenLui · 30/08/2017 14:02

No, sorry.

WyfOfBathe · 30/08/2017 14:05

No. Even without the song link it would be too much imo. I know a family where the DM and two DDs all have flower names and I'm not keen.

No I wouldn't. but have just had a doh!! never clocked that before about the actress Halle Berry.......

"I know a Holly with a toddler Ivy! I commented on it with a smile but that's the last I thought of it until this thread. It's fine."

YOU think it's fine because you made the comment once and forgot about it. Meanwhile every single new person the OP meets is also making that same comment you made, so it is unlikely to be the last she thinks / hears about it.

Fine if the OP doesn't mind that, but she has no idea whether her unborn Dd would mind it.

Maybe the OP doesn't mind that? It's not like they're called Dick and Head, is it? They're not offensive words, it's not a negative connotation.
The child's friends are unlikely to know the mum's name, and therefore no connection to be made. The mum obviously doesn't mind the connection as otherwise she wouldn't have named the child Ivy.

Ecureuil · 30/08/2017 17:53

Plus, I didn't make the comment to the parent or child, just to my DH. So they wouldn't even know I'd commented on it.

stellarfox · 30/08/2017 18:31

I wouldn't

raviolidreaming · 30/08/2017 19:10

you'll only reel off your baby's name to strangers so it won't be an issue outside of the family

Unless, like most of us, you also tell your friends, colleagues, acquaintances your child's name.

Elledouble · 30/08/2017 19:17

Ivy would be a lovely middle name - I can think of lots of names it would go with (Elizabeth, Imogen, names with more syllables maybe) - maybe compromise and choose a different first name?

Popskipiekin · 30/08/2017 19:20

We had a December baby. He was nearly called Gabriel - because we liked it - but then I twigged Grin that my name was Mary, and having Mary and Gabriel in same family, esp with Christmas baby, would be commented on forever more. But tbh I'm a little sad we didn't as I do love the name, and if we have another DS then we will be stronger minded and call him Gabriel. So. Nothing wrong with Holly & Ivy, both lovely names, you'll just have to deal with the perpetual commenting.

TestTubeTeen · 30/08/2017 20:32

Popski, what did you settle on instead of Gabriel? Joseph maybe?

LottieDoubtie · 30/08/2017 20:34

Balthazar?

daisypond · 30/08/2017 21:21

I think it's fine. I'm not keen on flower names, so I wouldn't choose Ivy myself.

BifsWif · 30/08/2017 21:33

Yes, it's lovely!

Amaried · 30/08/2017 21:35

God no

wiltingfast · 30/08/2017 21:43

NO

Bluntness100 · 30/08/2017 21:45

Holly and ivy? Nope, that's just too cheesy and twee.

CoffeeAndEnnui · 30/08/2017 21:46

Yes! And I would buy the beautiful book Holly and Ivy and read it to her every single Christmas. (And weep, because that book kills me.)

CoffeeAndEnnui · 30/08/2017 21:50

The Story of Holly and Ivy, rather.

Would you call your daughter Ivy if your name was Holly?
Pallisers · 30/08/2017 21:52

no. definitely not.

wanderings · 30/08/2017 21:54

Another unfortunate pairing is Holly with the surname Berry.

(I don't like the song The Holly and The Ivy, it's very repetitive)
