Aubrey: for a boy?

I absolutely love the name Aubrey, but thought it was only useable on a girl. However, after seeing that other thread, it seems that people still view it as a boys' name (yay!) is it useable on a boy then? Or do you think it's mean/he'll hate me...? If not, is it okay for a middle name??? If so, he'd be Charles Aubrey (Charlie) Smile if it is fine, he'll obviously be Aubrey Charles!

I think it's still usable for a boy.

HappyLollipop · 30/08/2017 01:47

It's suitable for a boy although it's a bit old fashioned. it's the rapper Drake real name as well which is a rather cool namesake to have.

Marmitetoasties · 30/08/2017 01:50

Ooh this is odd, I had a relative who fought in World War One called Aubrey Charles! Never heard Aubrey anywhere else especially not the two together.

I (obviously) approve

grufallosfriend · 30/08/2017 07:33

Aubrey is a cool boys name. I much prefer Aubrey Charles!

aleC4 · 30/08/2017 07:35

Never heard of Aubrey for a girl, only Audrey!
Definitely a boy's name.

MammieBear · 30/08/2017 07:48

Definitely, after all it is a boy's name originally you can always win that argument! Gives the cute Nn. Brey as well.

Mclaren37 · 30/08/2017 08:31

I like Aubrey for a boy! Really like Aubrey Charles and prefer that to the first name Charlie tbh.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 30/08/2017 08:34

I know a boy named Aubrey, he's 6.
It is a boys name.

sooperdooper · 30/08/2017 08:35

I've only ever known it as a boys name :)

Jooni · 30/08/2017 08:41

Fine (in fact better) for a boy

Bellaposy · 30/08/2017 08:42

Fine for a boy. I know a one year old boy called Aubrey.

HeadDreamer · 30/08/2017 08:50

I have only heard of it as a boys name. But then we have female Taylor, Cameron, Hayden, Jamie, so it's anything goes these days. You are giving him Charles too so if he doesn't like Aubrey he can go with the ubiquitous Charlie. BTW Charlie is a girls' name too nowadays.

HeadDreamer · 30/08/2017 08:50

I mean usable for a girl. But more common for a boy.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 30/08/2017 08:51

I've only ever known it as a boys name.

MN say boy, but my RL experience said girl Sad I love the name Aubrey for a boy, but have received sooooo many raised eyebrows when mentioned in RL that we've struck it off the list. Aubrey is a popular girls name in America and that seems to be seeping over here - or people have only come across the name when watching American tv and therefore assume it's a girls name.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 30/08/2017 14:39

Lemon If you google "famous Aubreys", yes lots of American women come up, but also lots of men- authors, actors and musicians.

Here is a wiki link, explaining the origins of the name- which is male. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aubrey

Lemondrop99 · 30/08/2017 15:38

I know. I view it as a boy's name, which is why we considered using it. All I'm saying that when I mentioned calling our son Aubrey to people in real life, practically everyone responded by pulling a face and saying it's a girls name. In my limited experience, it seemed the general public perception of the name has shifted towards girls. I know it's not, but I decided it was unfair to leave our boy having to battle the misconception Sad

Overworrier · 30/08/2017 15:45

Boycie's Christian name in only Fools & Horses.

Seems to be a unisex name going on pp's.

I am so sick of lovely boys' names being appropriated for girls.

GoGoGazelle · 30/08/2017 20:06

I know a male Aubrey aged about 4. Definite boy name for me.

Auntiedahlia · 30/08/2017 20:08

Only a boy's name as far as I believe.

redfairy · 30/08/2017 20:13

Definitely a boy's name

AuntieStella · 30/08/2017 20:17

The only one I know in RL is a man

frogsoup · 30/08/2017 20:24

The only Aubrey I know is male and VERY posh - aristocracy, big country house kind of posh. So personally I'd go for Charles Aubrey rather than Aubrey Charles, as a first name it is a bit too brideshead revisited for my tastes!
