Need a longer name to be shortened to Mollie.

35/40 Bump is called Mollie which we like but I want her to have a name that we can shorten so her nickname is Mollie. I'm not sure Mollie is very professional for when older.
I can only think of Margaret which I'm sure about.
TIA

Surely Mollie is the nn for Mary .

Molecule, Emollient, sorry I'm no helpGrin I like just Mollie anyway.

nooka · 30/08/2017 07:07

Molly is traditionally a diminutive for Mary (as is Polly slightly surprisingly). I think now people might be a bit surprised to discover that the Molly they know is really a Mary so I'm not sure I'd put Mary on the BC. generally I agree with most other posters, Molly is a good stand alone name now and shouldn't bring any issues. Mollie is very cutsie to me, it looks like it's a diminutive and isn't really.

Otherwise you'd have to look for a name with 'mol' in it, and apart from Molly and Romola I can't find any. I don't think names like Amanda or Maureen become Molly at all, they just seem a bit random to me.

Mallory - I love it!

didyoureally · 30/08/2017 08:24

I was told that it was traditionally short for Mary. We know a Mathilda who has always been known as Molly. I think it is a great name as it is and not informal at all.

deste · 30/08/2017 08:29

The last headmistress of a very prestigious private school near us was named Mollie.

ilovesushi · 30/08/2017 09:32

I suppose she could call herself Mol as an adult if she finds it too girly.

Awalkinthepark1 · 30/08/2017 09:42

Molly -Mary or Margaret. Mollie is a lovely name.

catsarenice · 30/08/2017 10:28

Mollandra. Quite like that - did I make it up??

MrsOverTheRoad · 30/08/2017 10:50

I think Molly looks much better than Mollie and people will always spell it Molly you'll find.

thegreylady · 30/08/2017 11:31

I thought it was short for Maureen like Maggie is short or Margaret.

AdalindSchade · 30/08/2017 12:20

Definitely molly not mollie.
Molly is a nice name though a bit ubiquitous at the moment, xanthe is also nice and more unusual

Benedikte2 · 30/08/2017 12:34

Definitely not Mol for short -- old name for prostitute as in Defoes Mol Flanders.
Why not Xanthe Mollie, then she has her "dignified name," if she requires it and the everyday Mollie
Good luck and do tell us what you decide finally to call your DD

Bubblesoup · 30/08/2017 13:34

Molly (or Mollie) is absolutely fine! It's a lovely name and it is fine for a professional woman. Type 'Dr Molly' into Google and you get heaps of female doctors come up. Go for it!

FWIW I prefer the spelling Molly, but there's nothing wrong with Mollie.

Mellinda or Melinda

Melina

Melody?

Karmapolicearrestthisman · 30/08/2017 13:51

Amalia/Amalya?

HelenaJustina · 30/08/2017 15:10

Mallory is a great shout, unusual and strong.

Prefer the Molly spelling (plus all of those letters occur in Mallory) please call her Mallory as I'm kicking myself that my chances of using it are long gone!

candlerings · 01/09/2017 11:54

Amelia is great, I think Mallory would get made fun of as it is quite old fashioned.

Mustardnowletsnotbesilly · 03/09/2017 10:19

Thanks so much for all the suggestions!

I think we will will go with Mollie Clara (Very old Scottish surname)

you all really helped!!!! Cheers

Just have to work out how she is getting out now!!!

I like the Mollie spelling too. It looks more old-fashioned.

I see you have decided now but I have to say I LOVE the idea of a Margaux, a Margeurite or even a Molyneux - who is always called Mollie so no-one knows her amazing full name until she tells them!

Hulababy · 03/09/2017 12:03

Congratulations; lovely name

sunshinesupermum · 03/09/2017 12:06

DD2 has always been called Katie (never given the name Katherine) - why have a longer name when you plan to call her by the shorter one anyway? And Mollie is a lovely name for adults as well as children.

LadyPenelope68 · 03/09/2017 12:10

If you're going to go for Molly then it needs to be spelt with a Y in the traditional way. Wit the IE, it's just a modern made up name IMO.

FizzyGreenWater · 03/09/2017 12:34

Some of the 'Mollies' on the dreaded Wikipedia:

Mollie Arline Kirkland Bailey (c. 1844–1918), American circus musician, singer, war-time nurse and alleged Confederate spy
Mollie Hardwick (1916–2003), English author
Mollie Hunter (1922–2012), Scottish writer
Mollie McConnell (1865–1920), American theater and silent film actress
Mollie Orshansky (1915–2006), American economist and statistician
Mollie Phillips (1907–1994), British figure skater
Mollie Skinner (1876–1955), Australian Quaker, nurse and writer
Mollie Sneden (1709–1810), ferry operator before and after the American Revolution
Mollie Steimer (1897–1980), Russian-American anarchist, trade unionist, anti-war activist and free-speech campaigner
Mollie Sugden (1922–2009), British actress

So no, not modern, and no, not made up. Very old in fact, but possibly more New World than British spelling? - lots of Americans here.

Hulababy · 03/09/2017 12:35

LadyPenelope68 - only if you consider its use for over 100+ years as modern though.

MoonPower · 03/09/2017 12:36

Mallory is cool 😎
