If I loved Peregrine would else would I like?

I love the name and keep coming back to it time and again, DH loves it and we like all plausible nicknames but I don't want my child to feel I've given him a ridiculous name and I'm scared of the eye rolls when I introduce him to people. What other names would people suggest that are a little more mainstream? Thanks in advance.

Gruffalo I hadn't realised most people thought it was posh either, maybe Peregrine is the next Albert/Sebastian/Arnold. I love Jack for sentimental reasons but I agree although I don't want a rare name for the sake of being "unique" I would quite like him to have a less common name if possible just so he doesn't have to be little Jack/ big Jack/ Jack C type thing.

How could you not think peregrine was a posh name. There was a peregrine in my school (year below). He used to get teased a lot about been posh so my instinct would be to stay away. Seen to remember he was known as Perry grim.

WildCherryBlossom · 28/08/2017 18:15

Aside from the current Duke of Devonshire and the previous Lord St Germans, both Peregrine, the peers seem to currently be selecting from a fairly small name pool. Look at the current list of Duke's heirs:

Lots of Charles, James, Henry, George, William.

I really wouldn't worry about it seeming pretentious. As I said before, if you love it, use it. You might regret not choosing it.

WildCherryBlossom · 28/08/2017 18:18

Zwellers it's possible children would have teased him about something else if he had had a different name

ShuttyTown · 28/08/2017 18:34

FFS. Only on MN Hmm

ShotsFired · 28/08/2017 23:37

An acquaintance of mine called her baby Sebastian last year. It's awful, doesn't suit a small child at all, and the even more hideous "Seb" just makes it worse.

CleverDick · 28/08/2017 23:43

Sextus

grufallosfriend · 29/08/2017 07:19

I don't like Seb either. But Perry is cool imo.

WaxOnFeckOff · 29/08/2017 07:39

I think I'd rather use a name that didn't suit a small child but situated an adult than the other way round. You're a longer time an adult.

School can be tough for kids especially boys. What if it makes school more challenging because of teasing which can be intense with boys. I like it too but perhaps it is better as a middle name. That way it won't appear first on school register etc. And he can choose if he wants to use it. School can be hard trying to fit/blend in what if it makes him a target for teasing?

grufallosfriend · 07/09/2017 07:59

In my experience kids don't get teased over a name (unless it's Willy or Poo) and kids are far more open minded about different names than some Mumsnetters.

How is Peregrine any different than Sebastian or Patrick? Or Perry than Sebby or Paddy?

GinIsIn · 07/09/2017 08:08

I like Peregrine. But Reggie and Perry are AWFUL, and chances are that you'd wind up with him being called one of those.

Kr1s · 07/09/2017 08:32

I agree this is a statement name of class.......but unless you're proper toff posh and not just Laura Ashley account posh, it sounds affected

I agree . I know two Peregrines and they are major public school posh, not "we might send out kids private if we can afford it " aspirational middle class.

OP you should go for one of the lovely names on your second list.

MammieBear · 07/09/2017 10:49

Griffin? It's another bird name and has a lovely meaning.

RaincloudOfDoom · 07/09/2017 11:10

I thought Peregrine was a girls name - source Jilly Cooper novel.

TheWeeWitch · 07/09/2017 11:15

Ageee with pp - why not call him Peregrine but use a nn IRL. Perry is a great nn, very usable at school and easily spelled.

Skittlesss · 07/09/2017 14:34

Aaahbump... I was about to say the same!

GinIsIn · 08/09/2017 06:13

@Raincloudofdoom - if you mean the one referred to in Polo, that's a man?

RaincloudOfDoom · 08/09/2017 11:04

I'm thinking of Georgie the glamorous pop singer, whose husband hankered after some lost love called Peregrine (or was it something else?), and his bit on the side pole-axed her by saying that he called her "His second Peregrine". Though why anyone would be flattered at being called the second somebody else I don't know...

GinIsIn · 08/09/2017 14:25

Yes - that was a man. It was his best friend, not a lover.

RaincloudOfDoom · 08/09/2017 16:01

Ohhh okay. Clearly I need to brush up on my Jilly Cooper!

Marcipex · 08/09/2017 18:02

I like Peregrine, but not Perry or Reggie.
I really like Faraday, Magnus, Maximillian, Rocco.

grufallosfriend · 08/09/2017 18:21

I like Peregrine. I know a Per. Not sure if he's a Peregrine. I like Perry too.

Level75 · 08/09/2017 19:25

Tristan? Aurelian? Benedict?

GinIsIn · 08/09/2017 22:08

@Raincloudofdoom - I do know my JC. Hence my username! Grin
