If I loved Peregrine would else would I like?

I love the name and keep coming back to it time and again, DH loves it and we like all plausible nicknames but I don't want my child to feel I've given him a ridiculous name and I'm scared of the eye rolls when I introduce him to people. What other names would people suggest that are a little more mainstream? Thanks in advance.

Use Peregrine but give him a mainstream middle name that he can use if he hates it. Sorted.

Viviennemary · 27/08/2017 17:21

Peregrine is simply awful. Rolls eyes. Some truly awful names on this thread. Sorry but there you are. Gilbert is OK.

Terriersandtea · 27/08/2017 19:17

Yes we are planning Jack as a middle name as it's a family name and very straightforward so I feel it balances Peregrine quite well if we do go ahead with it. I like Pear and Pip as nicknames but I'm sure others will develop organically. I will carry on mulling it over and see if anything else steals my heart. Thank you to everyone who has commented. I feel more confident about potentially using it now.

I know everyone has personal opinions over names and I don't plan on telling people in person during the pregnancy so hopefully there won't be too many negative comments. Plus we aren't finding out the sex so all this worry may be totally unnecessary Smile

What else is on the list? Peregrine one of the worst names I've seen on here for quite a while.

Jooni · 27/08/2017 21:09

Pear?!

How about Griffin?

Applesandpears56 · 27/08/2017 21:20

Pip is a good nn and would work

midsomermurderess · 27/08/2017 21:21

Monty, Jolyon, Bertie, Roderick. PG Wodehouse type names.

TheLegendOfBeans · 27/08/2017 21:22

Marmaduke?

derxa · 27/08/2017 21:24

Because the OP's baby won't be the Duke of Devonshire? Sorry but I properly laughed at that.

Tunic · 27/08/2017 21:34

Note that D of D Peregrine called his own son William.

Anyway, names like Peregrine (I am imagining a man in mustard cords with a stutter). Timothy, Roland, agree that Roderick is a good one.

Terriersandtea · 27/08/2017 22:03

Arthur
Frederick
Rory
William
Albert
Alfred
Rupert
Ralph
Oscar
Edward
Hamish

Have all been mused over and I do like a lot of them, I suppose it's just that it's such a big decision I don't want to regret it in the future. I like the melodic sound of Peregrine, if it was slightly more common I wouldn't be thinking twice, I guess what I'm trying to say is we didn't want a unique name just to be totally original it's just sort of stuck and now everything we try instead doesn't feel quite right.

Baby Perry would fine. He could grow into Peregrine.

I would say one of the things you don't like very much if you want to call your baby Peregrine, would be your baby! That would really be a name to endure rather than enjoy, sorry.

And if you want to try and enforce Perry as a nickname, then why not just call him Perry to start with (apart from the fact it's a bit wet).

Yika · 27/08/2017 22:30

I know someone whose middle name is Peregrine - he revels in it - has a rather more mainstream first name though. I quite like it but it is vv posh.

With a plain middle name as in Peregrine Jack should be OK.

As far as nicknames go, could be Per like the Swedish name.

What about
Hugh
Ranulph
Guy

ladybirdsaredotty · 27/08/2017 22:46

I have similar concerns over the name Caspian and have had a fairly recent thread about it. I don't think we'll go with it ultimately (although it might make the middle name) but I do feel a bit sad about it. It's not me who has to live with it, though, and like a PP said, it feels like a bit of a gamble. Good luck making a decision Smile

Buntysoven · 27/08/2017 22:47

Shotsfired what a ridiculous thing to say! Fair enough to say it's not your cup if tea but to accuse the OP of disliking her baby because of her name choice is melodramatic nonsense.

RJnomore1 · 27/08/2017 22:55

Have you considered Falcon?

Nah seriously go for Peregrine nn Perry and just hope he doesn't befriend a Kevin

ShotsFired · 27/08/2017 22:55

Of course I'm not saying the OP doesn't like her baby! It was a turn of phrase based on her own wording in the first post (if I like x what else will I like...) Smile

allegretto · 27/08/2017 22:58

Kester

littlemissneela · 27/08/2017 23:05

My nephew is a Peregrine. I'll admit I was a bit Hmm when I first heard it, but its grown on me and I love it. If you love it, go for it.

HelenaHandcart · 27/08/2017 23:09

Perran?

InvisibleCities · 27/08/2017 23:21

I like it. My fantasy b/g twins would be Peregrine and Persephone!

FizzyGreenWater · 27/08/2017 23:21

Ok, he might be Pip, he won't be Pear, but he's most likely to be Perry. How do you feel about that?

Montague nn Monty?

Jolyon, nn Jules, Jonty?
