Be honest: do you like the name Edmund?

Our baby boy arrived yesterday and we have announced his birth (obviously!) and that included his name - Edmund Jack.

My closest friend has outright messaged me and said Edward is much cooler... or I should swap the names around. She then knew I was a bit upset and just said she's joking and "will love him whatever his name" Sad

My mum has said "you can't call him that"... My dad made a comment about being back in the 1920s.

It's just constant and making me really quite sad. I thought people wouldn't be so rude if he was here...

Be honest: do you like the name Edmund?

It will honestly make me consider using something else.

I really like it & it's on my list for our boy (but my husband isn't so keen and prefers Edgar)

Rayna37 · 27/08/2017 08:36

Your friend was incredibly rude with her comments. Don't mind your parents, they won't know as many babies and probably don't realise half of the current top 20 names were last popular a century ago. It's a great name.

lazycrazyhazy · 27/08/2017 08:36

I adore it, always have so smart and more individual than Edward with all the same advantages of being able to be called Ed if he wants. Incredibly rude of people in your real life to comment adversely! Our DGC pretty much all have names which took me aback at first but it took about 10 minutes to get used to them.

MammieBear · 27/08/2017 08:40

I think of the Chronicles of Nania when I see it or here it, there was a king Edmund so it is royal approved, it's a good solid name.

LarkDescending · 27/08/2017 08:47

Edmund is a great choice! Rich with historical and literary references, well-known but unusual enough that it won't be "everywhere" or indeed everyone's cup of tea. I find that refreshing. I know a lovely young Edmund, just off to university now, full of youthful promise.

Congratulations on your new arrival OP Flowers

LadyoftheLake123 · 27/08/2017 08:56

Shocked your parents and 'friend' said this to you! How rude!

Agree with pp who said that if they want to name a baby, they should have their own - how is this any of their business??

And I think Edmund Jack is a lovely name. Stick with it, op!

Agustarella · 27/08/2017 09:17

Another Blackadder and King Lear fan here. It's a great name, traditional and classy!

saffronwblue · 27/08/2017 09:57

Congratulations and it is a great name. Timeless, strong and great literary heritage.

sheepflower · 27/08/2017 10:00

Not a bad name, I do think of Blackadder but I doubt his peers will. Sure he'll rock it.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 27/08/2017 10:00

What a great name, Edmund Jack ! ❤️

Laquila · 27/08/2017 10:02

Lovely name. I like both Edmund and Edwin actually.

SchoolShoes · 27/08/2017 10:03

I like it very much.

It's not so familiar as Edward. They will get used to it.

I remember my little cousin being named Sam and thinking it was a real old man's name!

Brownsauceandsausages · 27/08/2017 10:04

I love it too

Footle · 27/08/2017 10:38

Indulgentberries, James really isn't a 'more traditional' name than Jack!

tiguanabanana · 27/08/2017 10:39

Edmund Elephant the smarty pants.

fishfingerSarnies · 27/08/2017 14:45

I think it's lovely! I'd have it on my list if dh would let me.
Ignore the naysayers, how dare they pass judgment especially once a baby is already here cheeky fuckers.

AlicePatricia · 27/08/2017 14:49

Wow Shock shocked at all the replies! I'm so pleased more positive ones came along.

I think we're going to be sticking with Edmund Jack.

Thank you!

I expect a few tactless remarks from the grandparents but a friend has no business being so free with their opinion!

Nothing at all wrong with Edmund. Eddie is lovely. Not keen on Ned and definitely don't use Ned if you have any Scottish connections, 'ned' is used there as 'chav' is used in England.

Mol1628 · 27/08/2017 15:29

Definitely stick with it. You'll probably always regret it if you don't. No matter what you choose someone somewhere will have an opinion. Too popular, to unusual, someone they dislike with the name etc.

tinymeteor · 27/08/2017 15:32

It's great! And it's your choice. They can all bog off.

TheHandmaidsTail · 27/08/2017 15:35

Good it's a great name!

I wish I had stuck with Hermione as our choice for DC1 but listened to the opinions of others Angry

Don't make the same mistake as me

ohlittlepea · 27/08/2017 15:36

If you like it then thats what matters. I would never be so rude as to give a negative opinion on a name i hadnt been asked about.
As you've asked I do find it a bit insipid. But his friends will all call him Ed Im sure and Jack is lovely. The combination of the two works well :)

bunningsbunny · 27/08/2017 15:41

Dh is Edmund and I think it's great - he has lots of other 'ed' friends but they're all Edwards

Much cooler than Edward as it's much rarer.

indigo13 · 27/08/2017 15:57

Yes its a great choice. What is wrong with your friend?!

Pemba · 27/08/2017 15:59

I do quite like it and prefer it to Edward, it's certainly less common (common as in commonly found, not lower class). To me if it's associated with any era it would be the middle ages, dashing knights in armour etc., don't know what your dad is on about with his 1920s comment!

Some people just can't deal with anything slightly unusual. They lack imagination.
