Be honest: do you like the name Edmund?

Our baby boy arrived yesterday and we have announced his birth (obviously!) and that included his name - Edmund Jack.

My closest friend has outright messaged me and said Edward is much cooler... or I should swap the names around. She then knew I was a bit upset and just said she's joking and "will love him whatever his name" Sad

My mum has said "you can't call him that"... My dad made a comment about being back in the 1920s.

It's just constant and making me really quite sad. I thought people wouldn't be so rude if he was here...

Be honest: do you like the name Edmund?

It will honestly make me consider using something else.

Edmund is a great name. There's loads of Edwards around, this is a nice twist on it.

It's certainly not a crazy off the wall name that people - even if it's not their favourite name - are likely to actively detest.

I think people have been unforgivably rude to ruin your birth announcement when your son is already here!

Edmund has some lovely shortnings like Ed, Eddie, Ned and Ted.

If you and your DH love it, stick with it and be proud. You will NEVER find a name that everyone likes! You'll always get a mixed response, try not to let it get to you too much

firawla · 26/08/2017 19:56

I like it! It has more character than Edward and I like the narnia association

OCSockOrphanage · 26/08/2017 19:57

My great uncle -- a lovely man according to my mum, although he died just before I was born, was Edmond. I know Millenial and Victorian Edwins and Edwards, who have all become Neds and Teds. It's okay, there are charming diminutives for the younger years, and then they are able to choose their nickname. Less good in Scotland perhaps, where Neds are a particular variant of hooligan...

It's a great name OP have confidence in yourself!

Malaco · 26/08/2017 20:32

There's a clip on youtube called "Edmund" from an episode of Miranda where she is quite rude about the name. I'll leave you to decide whether to look it up!

Jooni · 26/08/2017 20:33

I love it! Congratulations on your new baby and on your great taste in names! Grin

Footle · 26/08/2017 20:33

I love it. You love it. Use it.

Batteriesallgone · 26/08/2017 20:34

No. Makes me think of highbrow 'baddies'. And blackadder. Edward on the other hand is lovely

ElfrideSwancourt · 26/08/2017 20:35

I love Edmund and the important thing is you love it

QueenNefertitty · 26/08/2017 20:37

Let him be an Edmund in a world of Edwards, OP.

My DS has a similarly old fashioned name (same era), that is much less "cool" than another v similar name that's being used LOADS at the moment, and we get some Hmm when I introduce him - but I tend to find as soon as you know a kid, they become that name and it's a non-issue IYSWIM?

SuperBeagle · 26/08/2017 20:37

I think of Blackadder.

It's not a bad name, but I prefer Edward.

Finch82 · 26/08/2017 20:38

I love it. Everyone else, friends and relatives, will come round to it too. Any name is going to divide a room!

ohherewegoagain · 26/08/2017 20:40

Don't love it, but I taught an Edmund who is an amazing little kid, so the name will always bring a smile to my face.

lisara79 · 26/08/2017 20:41

Nothing wrong with the name. Tour baby, your choice.

EvelynWardrobe · 26/08/2017 20:43

It's not to my taste but it's a really good name, unusual without being uneeq. Good nn potential and soooooo much better than the plague of Oscar/Oliver/Alfie.

Hold firm, you're vulnerable at the mo. Flowers

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 26/08/2017 20:44

Sorry not for me no.

winkygirl · 26/08/2017 20:45

Absolutely love it Smile

PanannyPanoo · 26/08/2017 20:45

Congratulations on your little boy.I think Edmund is a great name and obviously one you have spent a long time considering and is one you love. That is what is important. I taught an Edmund once. - just one in 20 years. He was kind, gentle, clever and funny and exactly the sort of child to be proud of.

chips4teaplease · 26/08/2017 20:45

Yes, I love the name Edmund. It helped me trace my family history back generations, as every generation has a 'John Edmund' or 'John Edmond'.

Hi Leicestershire kinfolk! You don't want to be related to us but you are. DNA and John Edmund. I've got you sussed.

ProfAnnieT · 26/08/2017 20:47

Edward is very "Twilight". Suppose it depends how you define "cool"...

stitchglitched · 26/08/2017 20:49

It's lovely. I love all 'Ed' type names and I have an Eddie. (Full name Edward but never used)

NataliaOsipova · 26/08/2017 20:50

I love it. The Blackadder association is a) quite cool (I think) and b) relevant only to anyone of a certain age. I used to babysit for a boy called Edmund, so it has fond associations for me. It's classic but slightly unusual. Perfect.

TheWeeWitch · 26/08/2017 20:51

Yes! It's a great name. We know an Edmund who is 8yo. He's a super kid and his name absolutely suits him.

I hope you aren't letting the negative people get to you. It's incredibly rude and entitled of people to behave that way.

Ttbb · 26/08/2017 20:53

I love it!

ShowPineapple · 26/08/2017 20:55

I really love it it's different but not weird (therefore cool) and suits from boy to man. Think all the nicknames are good too. Perhaps it's dated to the older generation but lots of older type of names are in again and my dd is named a name I'm sure was popular 100 years ago. It's not recent enough to be dated in a bad way there's not lots of middle aged people called Edmund. Keep it OP I think it's a lovely name and you'd regret it if you bow to what other people think when you love this name.
