Eliška

My parents are Czech and I was born there but living in the U.K. since I was 6. I'm married to a Brit.

Pregnant with a girl and we both like the Czech name Eliška. It's really popular in the Czech Republic (in the top 10) but basically unheard of here in the U.K.

The accent on the s makes a big difference. Eliška is pronounced el-ish-ka. Without the accent Eliska pronounced el-is-ka. What should I go with in an English speaking country? Accent or no accent on her birth certificate?

Do you even like the name Eliska?!

With the accent on the s I read Elishka, without it I would just read Elisha. I think keep the accent and the sh sound. It's pretty Smile

MotherTroubles · 26/08/2017 08:45

When it's got its little hat on I'd pronounce it El-ish-ka. Without hat I'd say El-is-ka. I have absolutely no knowledge of languages rough and I'd have no idea if I was pronouncing that correctly.

I like it with the ish sound, not so much without.

I don't know how easy it is to have the little hat above a letter in this country, especially if it changes the pronounciation.

grendel · 26/08/2017 08:45

I think it's a lovely name. Never heard it before but it sounds really pretty. And I would include the accent because that indicates how it should be pronounced, and also emphasises her Czech heritage.

czeu · 26/08/2017 08:51

Thank you all! We agree, it's a very pretty girls name Smile

Never heard it before, think it's lovely. I think enough people could read it as Elishka and it is pretty easily explainable.

I have posted before I have a not UK name that needs explanation to English speakers for them to spell/pronounce it right - I still as an adult get 'what a lovely name' responses when I introduce myself and I think you would get that with Elishka - spelt with hat obvs. It just becomes part of life to spell it and as a child it was nice being special.

chips4teaplease · 26/08/2017 08:56

Lovely name, keep the accent. Pretty sure that name will gain popularity in the UK. It's lovely and sounds good to UK ears.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 26/08/2017 08:56

With. It's a beautiful name. I've never heard it before.

Raines100 · 26/08/2017 09:03

No knowledge of Czech but my first guess with the accent was Elishka, so maybe the Czech spelling will be fine. It's a pretty name.
Eliska is nice, but if you're going to make up an Anglicised variant, I'd go with Elishka to retain the original pronunciation, otherwise you end up with a name that's not recognised in the UK or the Czech Republic.
Elise is apparently the English/French equivalent, and Alyssa or Alicia sound similar.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 26/08/2017 09:08

As the aunt of a Siân I can tell you that virtually everyone will omit the haček or put it in the wrong place, but your DD will very quickly learn when she is writing her name that one of the letters needs a little hat and will correct them!

czeu · 26/08/2017 09:10

I'll look in to accents on birth certificates in the U.K. I hadn't thought of that as an issue.

I like that she has the option to "anglicise" her name to Elle or Ellie if she feels too much like an outsider like I did when I was younger with my foreign name (I love my name now!).

BabyMoonPie · 26/08/2017 09:11

I went to college with an Eliska (with the accent which I don't know how to do on my phone), more commonly known as Lish. It's a lovely name and not hard to pronounce

TractorTedTed · 26/08/2017 09:13

I'd never heard the name before either, but it's beautiful.

And definitely go for the proper Czech spelling.

As you say, she can always anglicise it if she wants to. But I hope she doesn't as it's such a lovely name.

EekThreek · 26/08/2017 09:14

Without reading your post, I read the name as El-ish-ka, it's really pretty. I agree with PPs, there's all sorts of 'british' names that need the pronunciation explained, so don't let that put you off!

SavoyCabbage · 26/08/2017 09:14

It's a lovely name. I'm a supply teacher and so I get to read 30 names a day from a register I've never seen before and I'd pronounce it the same as you, which is good.

Haskell · 26/08/2017 09:15

Echoing what Zoya said- the accent will cause numerous admin issues for people, and she may find many things come through without the accent on. It's perfectly okay to register her with the accent though, the registrar won't have a problem, just double check they've put it in the right place.
FWIW, before opening the thread, I guessed it was pronounced Elishka, so that's a good sign.

EskSmith · 26/08/2017 09:20

My Dd has a name with an accent. It was fine for the registrar but not allowed on her passport. Dd certainly does correct people who forget her accent, I'm told she's even helpfully told her teachers the keyboard shortcut Angry

Liadain · 26/08/2017 09:23

I taught one once (Dublin).
Lovely name, no pronunciation problems for me or the kids. The accent however was an issue for them and I don't remember them writing it on cards for her etc, if that bothers you.

ElizabethShaw · 26/08/2017 09:30

I think Eliska and Elishka are both beautiful.

If you spell it with the accent I imagine you will initially have to correct people on the pronunciation and more often than not others will omit the accent when writing it. It depends how much you think this might bother you and your DD.

You could anglicise it to Elishka if you wanted, or another option is to have the correct spelling on the birth certificate and official documents but spell it phonetically day to day for nursery/school etc.

Jooni · 26/08/2017 09:44

What a beautiful name! I love both Eliška pronounced properly and Eliska pronounced "eh-LISS-ka". Personally I'd probably go for the latter to avoid having to explain spelling/pronunciation all the time here in the UK, but if the former is the proper Czech name and you are Czech then it makes sense to go with that for you. Just be prepared for her accent to be missed or mangled from time to time!

MammieBear · 26/08/2017 11:41

Stick with it, looks like your heart's are with that name, it's lovely by the way.

daisypond · 26/08/2017 11:52

Yep, it's fine with the hat on. I don't know any Czech and I immediately read it as Elishka.

czeu · 26/08/2017 15:25

Thanks all! I think what we're going to go for is Eliska for everyday but Eliška on her birth certificate as an ode to her heritage. My side of the family will pronounce it Elishka regardless, but I think for future DD Eliska is a really pretty name too and one DH and I prefer slightly more.

I'm glad no one said they hate the name! It's tough with foreign names and mixed cultures to find a good fit.

meltingmarshmallows · 26/08/2017 15:40

I really love it! I personally like it with the accent x

Glumglowworm · 26/08/2017 18:11

It's a really lovely name!

IsleofCalm · 26/08/2017 18:17

Yes very sweet! And I normally like very ordinary / common / standard / classic names. But this is cute and a very nice name indeed. Would you write it as Elishka?
