Eliška

My parents are Czech and I was born there but living in the U.K. since I was 6. I'm married to a Brit.

Pregnant with a girl and we both like the Czech name Eliška. It's really popular in the Czech Republic (in the top 10) but basically unheard of here in the U.K.

The accent on the s makes a big difference. Eliška is pronounced el-ish-ka. Without the accent Eliska pronounced el-is-ka. What should I go with in an English speaking country? Accent or no accent on her birth certificate?

Do you even like the name Eliska?!

It's lovely, really lovely, and the pronunciation is easy to learn (I got it straight away but am a linguist of sorts).

DramaAlpaca · 26/08/2017 18:21

Gorgeous name, and yes to keeping the accent.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 26/08/2017 18:22

I love it, so pretty !
I think Eliska is easier here, without the accent.❤️

LorLorr2 · 26/08/2017 18:22

Honestly I read it with 'iss' rather than 'ish', but either way it looks pretty and should be easily pronounceable to Brits :)

IsleofCalm · 26/08/2017 18:42

OP I think you may be about to start a name trend Smile Star

czeu · 26/08/2017 19:16

Aww thanks everyone ❤️

I think we'll pronounce it without the accent but when I or my family speak to her in Czech then it would be with the accent.

Similar to my name where my parents pronounce my name completely differently to English speakers.

What a beautiful name. I think as long as you aren't too worried if people pronounce it incorrectly when they read it or spell it incorrectly in birthday cards from the class it will soon be easily known within your circle. I know a Sian and an Esme who should have punctuation but generally don't .It is similar to Alissa or Alicia in English.

Hulder · 26/08/2017 20:42

czeu I answer to my name said both wrong and right - when I meet someone I'll obviously tell them the right way and the majority will
stick to it. But I don't make a fuss for those who don't get it. As a child, everyone said it right but then I knew the same people, via school, for ages and I made sure they said it properly Grin

When my new manager started and said she'd noticed people pronounced my name 2 different ways, which one was the right way? - I knew I had a good manager Smile

I think your DD will find the same with Elishka/Eliska.

LetZygonsbeZygones · 27/08/2017 12:08

It's gorgeous. Not heard it before. I like it with the accent. It's lovely either way thugh

mathanxiety · 28/08/2017 00:11

I love it, and I would pronounce it Elishka for everyday even if the accent is omitted for school or whatever.

My mum (in Dublin) is best friends with a Czech Eliška who would be in her 70s now. She left Czechoslovakia (as it was then) in the early 1970s but she keeps the accent and it hasn't caused her any problems.

My Irish name has an accent and I pronounce it as if it was there even though official documents where I am now don't include it. I use it when I sign my name and on unofficial docs like school directories.

mathanxiety · 28/08/2017 00:13

omitted for school records..

People will get used to it. It's no harder to learn Elishka then Eliska.

verystressedmum · 28/08/2017 00:32

I read it as Elishka and I don't know Czech.
I've never heard it before but it's a beautiful name.
Enough people will pronounce it as Elishka if you/she tells them her name. Some people will read it as Eliska but that's a pretty name too if she/you prefer.
I knew a Danica which was pronounced Dan-it-sa I always thought it was a lovely name.

Mclaren37 · 29/08/2017 18:44

What a gorgeous name! Definitely keep the accent / correct Czech spelling.

purplemunkey · 29/08/2017 18:48

Lovely name

LM1987 · 15/09/2019 11:21

Hi,
I've just read your post and I'm so glad I have! I'm expecting my 2nd and I do come from Czech ( been here for 14 years now) not sure what we are having but if it's a girl we would like to call her Elishka! My other half is British but loves the name as much as I do. If you don't mind me asking how's the name gone down with everyone and have you ever had any issues with pronunciation?

FishCanFly · 16/09/2019 11:44

I'd avoid any special characters if planning to live here. Pain in the arse.

namechangedbecauseithinkiabu · 16/09/2019 12:34

I’m confused by the responses here because the other day someone posted asking about Eleska and got almost entirely negative feedback! So it’s odd to me that everyone loves Eliska which is just one letter different.

namechangedbecauseithinkiabu · 16/09/2019 12:34

Oh - just seen that this thread was written in 2017 so long before last weeks Eleska thread

Malyshek · 18/09/2019 09:15

Love the name.
Had no problem reading it properly, but am not a good exemple as I'm not british (and lived in Eastern Europe for some time).

I do think you should check how it'd look like on her passport (with or without ? Not sure the british passports have this kind of special character).

I have a é in my name, and when buying stuff or registering online I always have to drop it because can't be processed by english/american websites...

whatausername · 18/09/2019 11:56

British passports aren't issued with "special characters". It'd be Eliska or Elishka on the passport depending what is on the birth cert. Any accents on a birth cert are omitted on passports.

DocBunnie · 13/10/2019 16:03

As an American born Elishka I’ve had a lot of people have great difficulty in pronouncing my name. I’ve been going by Ellie for years but honestly I’ve always wanted to change my name. It’s fascinating and flattering that all of you have posted that it’s a beautiful name as it’s a name I’ve struggled with my whole life.
