Edwards/Ted/Teddies do you know?

We are considering it for DS2. He would definitely be an Edward, formally. Ted or probably Teddie would be an 'official' nickname but he'd be Edward on paperwork and at school etc. I love the name Teddie but would want DS to have the choice of going by something less cutesy as he grows up!!

It goes beautifully with our other DS's name (a classic along the lines of William/Henry but slightly less popular) and is my husband's middle name, and his great grandfather's name, which is mostly why we are drawn to it.

But I'm worried it's a little bit too popular and too 'hipster' style which I'm not hugely keen on.

Anyway long brain dump there (!) Essentially to ask how many children you know who are called Edward, or Ted/Teddie. What ages are they, and where (vaguely!) are you located! I've only met two in my life who have been under 18, but apparently it is increasingly popular.

I know one Edward known as Teddy born in the last year.

I'm pregnant and a primary school teacher friend has already said to me unprompted "If it's a boy, please don't call him Teddy, I'm drowning in them!" So take from that what you will, though she did also say that most of the Teddys she teaches are short for Theodore rather than Edward.

krakentoast · 23/08/2017 13:50

Oh and the baby Teddy I know lives in London. My primary school teacher friend is in Wales.

Whataboutmee · 23/08/2017 13:51

I don't know any. Well apart from a Ted in his 80s.

cheesydoesit · 23/08/2017 14:07

I know a Ted and a Teddy.

ohnowhatcanido · 23/08/2017 14:16

I'm a teacher myself and have only ever taught the one, which is why I was suprised at it's popularity! I've taught oodles of Williams, James and Harry's though (and actually despite this I still am very fond of those names!)

I also prefer the spelling of Teddie but that's much of a muchness really!

Two, but neither are Edward. One is Edison and the other is Edwin. Both around 6/7.

MrsJoyOdell · 23/08/2017 14:18

Oh, South of England.

AuntieStella · 23/08/2017 14:19

I only know a couple - one is an Eddie day to day and one a Teddie.

Lovely name!

ohnowhatcanido · 23/08/2017 14:23

Oh I'm actually quite pleased that most are not Edward, as that would still be his actual name. I thought it was more popular than it is, clearly.

I know two Edwards, one is an Ed/Eddie and one a Ted/Teddy. I prefer the Teddy spelling, Teddie looks a bit too cutesy.

CakeRattleandRoll · 23/08/2017 15:52

My 5yo DS is an Edward/Teddy. I know one other who is always Edward, he is 2yo. But I'm in Australia, and Edward has always been less popular here than UK according to the stats.

When I taught in UK in the late '90s, there were 4-5 Edwards in every year group, but aside from one Ted and one Ned, they were all known as Ed. They would be in their 30s now.

Mammadragon · 23/08/2017 15:56

I know a lot of Teddys! 5 under two...but they are all Theodores or just Teddy. I know one Edward and he goes by Eddie xx

ilivebythesea · 23/08/2017 16:32

I know one Edward, aged nearly 15 years and is known by his full first name and one Eddie, aged 8 years.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 23/08/2017 16:37

I love the name, because my dad was Teddy (real name Edward,) and he was lovely.

I work in a secondary school and know maybe 4 Teddies, two of whom are girls.

harrietm87 · 23/08/2017 16:44

Out of the c.20 babies born to my friends/colleagues over the past couple of years there are two Edwards, one known as Ted and the other is Edward (so far - I'm sure will be shortened eventually).

implantsandaDyson · 23/08/2017 18:27

I know 1 -he's 5 coming 6. He's known as Edward, no nicknames.

Dontrocktheboat · 23/08/2017 18:43

I know one Eddie aged 8 short for Edward and one aged 9 short for Edwin.

One Teddy aged 3 short for Theodore.

I think Edward is perennially quite popular, but probably not loads in one class.

Mrsknackered · 23/08/2017 18:45

No Edward's under the age of order 15. They're all Eddy/Eddie's.

I know 2 Teddy's under 5.

Rockandrollwithit · 23/08/2017 18:48

My DS is three and goes to preschool with three Teds, although one is short for Theodore.

I like Edwin.

Littlelouse · 23/08/2017 19:01

@ohnowhatcanido I could have written your post myself, except we're considering Theodore with the nickname Teddy. Also a teacher but only have one in my school (secondary) and have been terrified by all the posts on here about it's popularity.

For a few weeks mid pregnancy, we totally discounted it because it seemed that there would be at least another 5 in his primary class but have now come back around to the idea because we like it so much and it 'sings' with our three syllable surname.

I spoke to my aunt, whose eldest is called Jack and was named at the height of its popularity and they both said that there has never been more than 1 other Jack in his class at school or friendship circle so that calmed my thinking. I hope you go for it!

rachrach2 · 23/08/2017 19:13

I know two Edwards (known as Eddie and teddy) and a Theodore (known as Teddy). They are 3, 1 and 1. I also have three adult friends called Edward known as Ed. I'm in the South East.

AccrualIntentions · 23/08/2017 19:15

I'm in the North East and I only know one, he's 5 and is Ted for Edward.

17caterpillars1mouse · 24/08/2017 07:38

I know one Edward but doesn't go by Ted/Teddy

Susiethetortoiseshellcat · 24/08/2017 08:06

One of my nct friends had a Teddy (Edward) and I have met another at a baby group. However my friend is a gp and says this is the name she sees the most amongst babies at the moment. She's in Essex.
