What do you think of Gardenia?

Would people struggle to pronounce it do you think?

I have never heard of it. Sounds a little made up.

I would pronounce it Gar-DEN-ee-a, is that how you're saying it?

Brighteyes27 · 23/08/2017 07:22

I wouldn't struggle to pronounce it but it sounds a bit over the top and very like the name of an old pensioners talk or hand cream to be honest.

grasspigeons · 23/08/2017 07:26

I would say the same a pp.
It's a pretty plant - is that why you like the name or is it the sound

50ShadesOfEarlGrey · 23/08/2017 07:32

I don't like it because having worked in new homes business I can tell you that every new home, certainly in the South East, had every wall painted Gardenia during the 2000's. I can't say if it's the same now, but I seem to remember reading it was the biggest selling paint colour that decade, having replaced the standard magnolia.
It's a shame as it is a very beautiful flower, with a lovely scent.

Bluntness100 · 23/08/2017 07:34

Well gardenia trees are lovely but I wouldn't struggle to pronounce it, it's quite a common flower/tree. I also wouldn't call my child it either. It's going to get shortened into something less pretty and I wouldn't want to be called it either. Sorry.

RoseAndRose · 23/08/2017 07:34

I would pronounce it like the plant: gar-deen-ee-a

I'm afraid I don't take to it as a name for a person

SenoritaViva · 23/08/2017 07:39

Gar DEEN eeya
Don't like it, sounds like homewares product rather than conjuring up the actual plant. Sorry

Alittlepotofrosie · 23/08/2017 07:41

Horrible as a name. Would you want to be called gardenia? Confused

chips4teaplease · 23/08/2017 07:41

The flower image is lovely, yet it doesn't seem to work as a name. I'm not sure why.

PoppyPopcorn · 23/08/2017 07:45

It's a bit Harry Potter...

There are so many lovely flower names, Gardenia isn't one of the better ones.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 23/08/2017 07:46

Nooooooo not a fan.

SarahJonesS · 23/08/2017 07:59

It will be hard to pull off. Perhaps more suited to a middle name?

Teddygirlonce · 23/08/2017 08:02

Sounds like a perfume to me - she may end up being called Gard or Gardy as diminutives by her school chums

juneau · 23/08/2017 08:08

It's Gar-DEEN-eeya. I know some flower names are popular and well-known - Daisy, Poppy, etc - but Gardenia? Personally I can't stand the smell of Gardenia - it's really strong and pungent - and that alone would put me off using it as a name!

Chewiecat · 23/08/2017 08:11

Reminds me of this Confused
It's a popular brand of bread in south east Asia

Gardenia
chowmeinchick · 23/08/2017 08:12

Is it Garden-ia?

Seems made up. I wouldn't want to have this name.

splendide · 23/08/2017 08:15

Yes I like the flower.

I thought people might think it was made up and pronounce it Gar-DEN-EE-a as per a previous poster.

Hmm it's pretty unanimous no isn't it? Must be just me!

OP posts:
grasspigeons · 23/08/2017 09:11

I could see Azalea or Camellia working a bit better - but they aren't the flower you love.

Choccyhobnob · 23/08/2017 09:12

Sorry OP it's definitely just you I'm afraid!

Ketchup123 · 23/08/2017 09:17

I like it. I think people would know to pronounce it Gar-deen-ee-a. It could be shortened to Deena.

splendide · 23/08/2017 09:57

Yes or Dinah I suppose.

OP posts:
Threeandabit · 23/08/2017 11:14

I think it would make a nice, unusual middle name.

BlackbirdSingsInTheDeadOfNight · 23/08/2017 11:28

It's the name of a Pizza Express pizza isn't it?

dowhatyouwish · 23/08/2017 11:56

I don't like it. All I can see is 'garden'

MammieBear · 23/08/2017 12:45

It's a lovely floral name seldom heard here however for a name that's going to stand out from all the Florence's, Flora's and Rose's (you get my drift) it is perfect.
