Is Sophie too popular?

I've suddenly got it in my head that DC2 (DD1) is going to be called Sophie!

Is this too popular and will she be one of many in her class? My name is very common, similar to Sarah and I've always been Sarah B. Which is a bit annoying and I'd prefer to avoid for her if possible!

I think Sophie is classic and timeless. It's popular for a reason but didn't come out of nowhere, which to me means faddy. It is pretty yet strong and is easily recognised around the world. Go for it!

NewMummy579 · 22/08/2017 08:26

If you love it then go for it, pretty and timeless name Smile We have a baby Jack and although it's really popular, have always loved the name and he is OUR Jack, doesn't matter if anyone else thinks it's too common or boring (had comments saying both to our faces!) There are some really stupid names going about just now with everyone competing to be 'unique' and 'special' ConfusedConfused

coragreta · 22/08/2017 09:09

I know you asked about Sophie but Sofia is the most common name in the world.

NancyJoan · 22/08/2017 09:14

It's a lovely name. My 11 yr old DD's best friend is a Sophie, there is another one in her year, but I don't know of many others at their school.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 22/08/2017 09:16

It's a lovely name, go for it !

grufallosfriend · 22/08/2017 09:19

It's very popular and will date imo.

2014newme · 22/08/2017 09:20

No, there's one in every class but only one

Elmo230885 · 22/08/2017 09:26

I have a 5 month old Sophie. We loved the name immediately, we didn't know if we were having a girl or boy. When she was born she was a Sophie no questions. I didn't realise it was so popular but I only know one Sophie and she is in her mid twenties. I suppose it depends where you live.
I love the name. Its timeless. When we have a second baby if we have a girl we like Alice which is similarly timeless IMO

theotherendofthesockportal · 22/08/2017 09:40

This is a bit different, my 5 year old cat is called Sophie. I named her as Sophie was the most pretty, girliest name I could think of. I am now slightly gutted I didn't save the name for a potential daughter. Instead my baby girl who is due in November will be called Beatrice.

Sophie is a beautiful name :)

grufallosfriend · 22/08/2017 09:57

Alice seems more classic and timeless to me. Sophie must have been in the top 10 for a number of years recently. Don't think Alice has ever been so popular?

WannabeChild · 22/08/2017 10:28

I know heaps born about 10-20 years ago. However there aren't as many little Sophies anymore.

ilivebythesea · 22/08/2017 11:15

Love it and always have. I only know only one young Sophie, aged 6 or 7 years. Not a fan of Sophia at all, but this seems more popular at the moment.

Like the spelling Sofie, particularly with a Scandi surname!

Pemba · 22/08/2017 15:50

I know a couple of Sophies in my DD's age group (early twenties). I wouldn't have thought it was so popular now for little girls though. I actually prefer it to the currently very popular Sophia (for little ones), although I like that too.

Yes it has been very popular over recent decades, but so what? It's a lovely, lovely name, so I'd say go for it!

sanasa · 22/08/2017 15:55

Friend sophie who's last 20s
And I know a toddler Sophia
Lovely name

AuntieStella · 22/08/2017 15:56

Sophie/Sofia and other variants added together has been the 'true' number one name (it's been used more than Isabel/variants since about 2011).

So yes, I think it's very likely you'll encounter a few others. But, just like pps have said, even when a name is given so frequently, it'll be only a few.

Chocolatecake12 · 22/08/2017 17:00

I only know of one Sophie - my niece. She's 15 and beautiful!
I have 2 ds's and neither of them have a Sophie in their year at school.
I don't know any adult Sophie's either.

mistermagpie · 22/08/2017 17:19

A friend of mine had a baby the other day called Sophie and I'm sorry to say that my first thought was 'what a boring name'... I didn't say that to her obviously but there are loads of Sophies and Sophia's round here.

mistermagpie · 22/08/2017 17:20

I do like the name though, my other friend is Sofia and I prefer that spelling (she's not British though).

Clembarrass · 22/08/2017 17:21

DD2 does have a Sophie in her class, and I know one other, (who is 4.)

Both DC have a Sophia in their class, and we know several others - I would say that is the more popular name, and Sophie a bit more unusual, particularly in that age group.

Lovely name, I would go for it, and not worry about duplication - my eldest has two girls called Niamh in her class, which I wouldn't have classed as a massively popular name, it's not just those with popular names that end up being Sarah B, or whatever.

JudasInTheTescoVan · 22/08/2017 17:22

I've a toddler Sophie but I haven't heard many other Sophie's at toddler groups.

Mammadragon · 22/08/2017 18:12

I know a baby Sophie and unfortunately I too thought it was really boring compared to her siblings. It's a bit like Jack to me, probably not as common as some names but just feels a bit blah.

WhittlingIhopMonkey · 22/08/2017 18:16

Wouldn't pick anything in the Top 10

Sophie is too popular imo

It's this generations Jennifer

NaughtyElephants · 22/08/2017 18:24

I have a name that was the most common for my year group. I hated it, always having to say both names on the phone for example.

However, choosing a less popular name is no guarantee of avoiding this anyway - because of my experience I vetoed any top 10 name for my DD and think her name was 18 the year prior to her birth. The next year it went to number 1 Angry so essentially if you love the name Sophie, use it regardless. It's a beautiful name and popular for a reason.

When DS came along I'd learnt my lesson and avoided any name in the top 100 just to avoid the same thing happening again, but that's just personal preference Grin

Rachie1986 · 22/08/2017 18:31

I have a preschool Sophie :-)

TurquoiseDress · 22/08/2017 19:06

I do love the name Sophie although if I have a DD in future I'd probably go for Sophia as it's (marginally) slightly more unusual by comparison.
