dances

I know someone who used to have a cat named Lysander.

Crumbs1 · 18/08/2017 19:12

Sounds like a prescription only lotion for scabies. Sorry.

SumAndSubstance · 18/08/2017 19:24

I think it depends on whether you have a reason for choosing it. Our child has a very unusual name and I'm always glad that we do have an explanation when people ask us why we chose it. I think it we didn't, we'd just look like try-hards (maybe we do anyway!) and their eyebrows would go even higher. The explanation appeases them.

PhuntSox · 18/08/2017 19:36

Wasn't Lysander a Greek hero, like Hector?

Argeles · 18/08/2017 19:38

I really like it - go for it!

When I was a teenager, I used to say that if I had a son when I was older I'd definitely call him Demetrius, or Lysander if the former was 'too much' for my DH. Unfortunately my DH doesn't like either name!

Pizzaexpressreview · 18/08/2017 19:40

prescription for scabies is exactly how it sounds!

SleepFreeZone · 18/08/2017 19:43

I like it. Nickname though? Ly? 🤔

schoolgaterebel · 18/08/2017 19:44

I would think 'that poor child' with a name like that. Sorry.

pestov · 18/08/2017 19:47

I know one and the name suits the sib set vibe that mum wanted. Parents also considered Caspar and Horacio. Nn Sandy or Zander. All kids have very a trad middle name to balance out the frou

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 18/08/2017 19:47

Vair posh, vair nice !

Auntpodder · 18/08/2017 19:50

I know of two adult Lysanders. The one I know best is a bit weird but ok. Both are enormously posh.

florascotianew · 18/08/2017 20:00

Sounds nice but is rather military. This may not matter, of course. Lysander was a Greek hero (Spartan admiral en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysander), and since then his name has become a by-word for military toughness. There's the very, very famous song 'The British Grenadiers' : "Some talk of Alexander and some Hercules/And Hector and Lysander, and such great names as these...." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_British_Grenadiers and also the World War II 'Lysander' spotter-plane and bomber. Etc etc

This is personal, but I really, really, really dislike 'Xander'.

itssquidstella · 18/08/2017 21:29

MumBod · 18/08/2017 21:52

I knew one. It's a gorgeous name, but the lad in question really didn't suit it.

Treaclespongeandcustard · 18/08/2017 21:55

I love it too :)

SuperBeagle · 18/08/2017 21:58

Horrible.

Reminds me of Midsummer Night's Dream, which is dire. And it also reminds me of lice.

ceecee32 · 18/08/2017 22:00

I thought you were asking about a nit lotion until I saw which forum this was in

abigailgabble · 18/08/2017 22:06

MyWhatICallNameChange · 18/08/2017 22:09

Mrsknackered · 19/08/2017 07:41

Salamander
Jilly Cooper
Shakespeare's most boring work
Harry Potter

Only the last one is a good connotation!
