DP & I have massively different tastes in names

NoCapes · 15/08/2017 21:16

I have 3 DC who all have what I would call 'proper' names, not massively traditional and not very common but all real names who everyone knows and who people will always know how to spell

DP has 1 DC who has a very modern name which IMO is very of its time iyswim

Now we're having a baby together and we cannot agree on a single name or even on a style of name - I'm slowly going insane

I know it's a big ask but can anyone suggest any names that tick both boxes?

So far he's said no to -
Thomas
Reuben
Jasper
Ferne
Erica
Alba

So far I've said no to -
Jackson
Ronnie
Reggie
Emme
Lola

Help!!!

Thanks Lego I agree Grin

Couple of girls suggestions that we both 'don't mind' which is serious progress! Thankyou!
Boys seem to be harder to agree on though

I am NOT a fan of calling a child Ronnie or Reggie when that is a shortening of a 'proper' name like Ronald or Reginald.

Could that be an option though? Giving your child a 'proper' name and then shortening it to something more like his suggestions?

E.g.
Vincent / Vinnie
Henry / Harry
Wilfred / Wilf

If it is a massive issue, would you consider finding out if the baby is a boy or a girl? This would cut your workload quite a lot!

I honestly don't think your styles are as far apart as you say - Alba and Emme or Lola would both seem of equal degrees of unusual and not particularly modern nor classic to me. Would it help to not think in terms of "my style, his style" as I really don't see an enormous gulf from Reuben to Jackson for example. And surely no-one can accuse Ronnie or Reggie of modernity.

For concrete suggestions, for a bit what sprung to mind for me as potential middle ground names are Luke or Lucas, for a girl, perhaps Dawn?

Best of luck!

Brio I've tried that, when I said Thomas he said he would call it Tommy but not Thomas
I tried Edward with Eddie as a NN, he said he wanted just Eddie on the birth certificate Hmm
I really hate this new trend of giving your child just a NN and not a full name

Sycamore honestly I think Reuben and Jackson and Alba and Lola are miles apart in terms of style

I'm trying really really hard not to use the c word, but that's what springs to mind with most of the names he suggests

I don't think they're that different. Ronnie and Reggie are both known shortenings of very traditional names, for example.

If it was one parent like Elizabeth and one parent liking Chanel, I could see your point.

Jack instead of Jackson? Lilllian nn Lily instead of Lola?

Hulder · 15/08/2017 22:22

Ronnie and Reggie is your DP wanting to call your offspring after the Krays.

It really is the same as Elizabeth and Chanel. If not worse.

NoCapes · 15/08/2017 22:29

Thankyou Hulder I thought I was going mad for a second there

Yes Ronnie & Reggie are shortenings of traditional names, but he doesn't want to use them because he likes the traditional names, he just wants the nicknames, which IMO has become a c word thing to do; using old man nicknames but not using the real names (Alfie, Archie, Ronnie, Vinnie etc)

He likes names like (his DS's name is included in this list) -
Riley, Harley, Ronnie, Levi, Alfie
Whereas I like (one of my DS's names included here) -
Joshua, Cameron, Jasper, George

I think they're as Elizabeth/Chanel as you can get

My suggestions:

Jacob / Jake
Tamsin
Daisy
Rosa
Blue
Ben

Ronnie and reggie?! Like the kray twins?! Your names are loads better tbh... Looking at your list I think Cara for a girl and Miles for a boy sort of sit in the middle of your 2 name styles
