Maybe this has been done to death on here, but I've just seen it described on another thread as 'chavvy' Hmm

I adore the name and would probably choose it for a boy if I am lucky enough to have another. I know that it has become quite popular, but funnily enough I don't know any.

Thoughts?

Don't like it at all.

Super common, but I'll never get past the biblical association of an old bearded man with an ark.

n0ne · 10/08/2017 20:04

It's not chavvy but it is the no 1 boy's name at the moment. If that doesn't bother you, go ahead.

Lozmatoz · 10/08/2017 20:05

I'd say popular rather than common. Good name!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/08/2017 20:06

The first thing I think when I hear this name is FFS not another one.Hmm

The names been around for thousands of years and People have only just discovered it.

I think it'll date very rapidly due its sudden surge in popularity.

All that said, though. I do actually think it's a nice name.

bigchris · 10/08/2017 20:06

I love the name but it's way too popular for me

squoosh · 10/08/2017 20:06

It's not chavvy (bloody hate that term!). It's a name that's gone from relative obscurity to massive popularity in the past five years or so, and from what I can tell a Noah is as likely to be middle class as he is to be working class.

Vintageproblem · 10/08/2017 20:07

It's a lovely name. I don't know any round here!

happystory · 10/08/2017 20:08

I like it. I work in early years and have only known two in 15 years!

squoosh · 10/08/2017 20:09

Actually I was talking to my Dad the other day and he said 'you'll never believe what X and X called their son.......NOAH! Can you believe that? How unusual!'. He was most surprised when I told him there were loads of little Noahs around these days.

But then, my Dad expects all boys to be called Neil. Grin

PansyParkinson · 10/08/2017 20:09

It's really common round here. I know of 6 of them aged 5 and under.

Llamacorn · 10/08/2017 20:09

I love it and would be a serious contender if I was to have a boy.

I know a lot of people saying it's popular but that perhaps depends on your location? Where I am I have only met 1 Noah, and I have 3 kids at school plus various clubs, take my 2 nephews to their clubs and toddlers and have lots of friends having babies just now.

greendale17 · 10/08/2017 20:10

Not chavvy at all but it is super popular

ScarletSienna · 10/08/2017 20:11

It sounds like someone saying 'No' in a whiny voice; "Nooowah I don't want to".

Annabelle4 · 10/08/2017 20:12

' Noah is as likely to be middle class as he is to be working class'

Thank you squoosh. I did wonder that, but couldn't possibly ask!

Lemondrop99 · 10/08/2017 20:26

I don't think Noah is 'chavvy', but I do tend to think "oh no, not another one" when I hear it.

Annabelle4 · 10/08/2017 21:06

Does anyone know an adult Noah?

I wonder will it date terribly?

OP posts:
Hassled · 10/08/2017 21:08

I don't know any Noahs older than 20 or so, but all the Noahs I do know are lovely. It's a really nice name.

MattBerrysHair · 10/08/2017 21:18

It's a beautiful name, I have a 9 year old Noah myself! I love Hebrew names and it was still quite unusual when I had him. I wanted to call ds2 Jude, but exdh wouldn't have it.

CaoNiMartacus · 10/08/2017 21:39

It makes me think of someone shouting down a metal pipe.

Jooni · 10/08/2017 21:40

Not "chavvy" in the least but yes, very very popular right now. I know at least 4, all under 5. It is a nice name though, I can definitely see the appeal.

Out of interest, what do people think of Noam? I'm surprised it's not surged in popularity too as people look for something similar but less popular. I think it's as nice if not nicer than Noah.

Annabelle4 · 10/08/2017 21:42

How do you pronounce Noam Jooni?
Is it no-am, or sounds like gnome? (Garden gnome)

OP posts:
Yika · 10/08/2017 21:46

I would say No-am (like Noam Chomsky). Definitely wouldn't think of him as Gnome Chomsky. It's a great suggestion. Noah is incredibly common these days (nice name though).

Bat3 · 10/08/2017 21:47

I'm not so keen.
It sounds like, 'Know her' in a Yorkshire accent, as many people drop the 'h.'
As in, 'Do you know her/Noah?'

squoosh · 10/08/2017 21:50

I think Noam can be pronounced No-um or Gnome. Noam isn't biblical is it? I'd assume a Noam came from a Jewish family and would think it a little unusual if a non Jewish couple plumped for it.

Jooni · 10/08/2017 22:06

I'd say No-am too. Pretty sure it is Biblical and while I agree it sounds like quite a religious choice, the same would probably have been said of Noah, Judah, Elijah etc. 20 years ago and now those are all fairly commonplace. Sorry for the tangent OP, just musing really...
