Judith

I am expecting no.3 and struggling with girls names. My other 2 have classic, international names (I think). They are names that have been around for many hundreds of years anyway. Any thoughts on Judith? I want timeless, easy to shorten names, not fussy or overly pretty or trendy names.
Thanks

To me Judith is a 40 year old woman not a child. Judy could be cute though

Topseyt · 30/07/2017 13:26

I don't dislike it, but wouldn't use it.

To me it is quite a dated name, but that might be because the only Judith I ever knew would now be in her seventies.

It might make a comeback, who knows?

LorLorr2 · 30/07/2017 13:30

How about Jennifer/Jenny?
Rachel might work for the type you're going for too :)

Chaffinch4 · 30/07/2017 15:12

I like Judith. Rachel is lovely too. I know a Miriam shortened to Mims, which I think is sweet. Esther? Could be Essie or Etty for short?

Chaffinch4 · 30/07/2017 15:13

Or what about Susannah?

tararabumdeay · 30/07/2017 15:59

Oh gosh, you've just reminded me that two older lads I had date/s with in the v. late 70's both already had sort of steady girlfriends called Judith.

They were lovely lads and after a date and grope or two went on, each, to marry their lovely Judith.

I got over it. I was 15 and very stupid.

friedegs · 30/07/2017 22:16

It always sounds like a "grey" name to me. I want to like it but I don't.

MammieBear · 31/07/2017 09:43

Lovely choice.

HoratioNightboy · 01/08/2017 15:28

I like -th names too, but I have to admit I struggle with Judith a little. I think it's the "middle-aged" connotations it has rather than the actual sound, which is quite nice.

Would Judah be an option? It was quite popular for girls in the 19th century so possibly even more old-fashioned though!

Loopy567 · 01/08/2017 16:33

I know a couple of young Primrose's.

SirVixofVixHall · 01/08/2017 16:37

I really like Judith. I am like the pp who said she likes this type of name. Classic, unfussy , not little girly or overly flowery, or whimsical. Not top try hard. I imagine Judiths living in beautiful houses of soft red brick, with polished floors, writing novels...

viques · 01/08/2017 16:39

I like Judith, also like Jennifer, another one due for a comeback IMO.

Lozmatoz · 01/08/2017 18:01

No!

Sophronia · 01/08/2017 18:33

Love names like Judith, Esther and Miriam. I would add Susannah, Ruth and Tabitha.

SirVixofVixHall · 02/08/2017 15:11

Oh yes, Esther, and Miriam. Love those too. Not Tabitha though, always gets shortened to Tabby, too cutesy.

SirVixofVixHall · 02/08/2017 15:12

And Jennifer/Jenny. Love that. I have never met a nasty Jenny!

Sophronia · 02/08/2017 15:19

I love Jennifer/Jenny too! So underused nowadays.

SirVixofVixHall · 02/08/2017 15:45

Sophronia- I also like Susannah and Ruth. All those names are of a type that is very underused now. We clearly like the same names! My father's cousins (born in the 30s and 40s) were Judith and Susan.

CruCru · 02/08/2017 18:02

Judith is a lovely name. A PP said that she could imagine a 40 year old Judith but not a child. This makes me like it more.

Chrisinthemorning · 02/08/2017 18:05

I know a Judith (she's 40 something) and she is often called Judy.
She's lovely so on that basis I like it.
It also makes me think of the Walking Dead, especially for a baby, in which case she's a lil ass kicker Grin

EmmyInTheSticks · 02/08/2017 18:25

I'm not keen on it and I like sensible, grown up names generally.

I love Julia and Diana - both good international names.

NC4now · 02/08/2017 19:25

I'd forgotten about Esther. That's one of my favourites.
I'm a Rachel and can vouch for it. It serves me well!

blinkineckmum · 02/08/2017 21:05

I quite like Esther. Love Susannah but can't use it. Very much dislike Tabitha. I also like Lynne - what can that be short for?

OP posts:
EmmyInTheSticks · 02/08/2017 22:01

Lynne is nice, I considered Linnea for my dd but felt it was too Scandinavian with no links there.

Fettuccinecarbonara · 02/08/2017 22:10

If it's good enough for Rick Grimes....
