What do you think of the name Elspeth. I love it but am aware many will find it weird

I love it. I have an elderly family member with this name and she is always known as 'Speth' which is sweet!

Jooni · 26/07/2017 17:33

I love this name!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 26/07/2017 17:46

Gorgeous name ❤️

florascotianew · 26/07/2017 17:46

Not at all weird at all in Scotland - I know several people with the name. Very nice it is, too.

mamabeak · 26/07/2017 18:02

It is a lovely name, a little old fashioned (perhaps) but different without being out there or unrecognisable.

n0ne · 26/07/2017 18:02

Love it

BendydickCuminsnatch · 26/07/2017 18:05

Very lispy and a bit wet. But I'm confident you'd dislike my name choices too Grin Know a few lovely Elspeths of all ages! Definitely doesn't date.

Love it

SweetheartTreacleTart · 26/07/2017 18:09

Really don't like it and for some reason I think of people with lisps making a complete mess of it.

mintich · 26/07/2017 18:16

I like it.

mintich · 26/07/2017 18:17

@Passmethecrisps I've now got the family ness theme tune in my head!

gincamelbak · 26/07/2017 18:20

I love it.

lmer · 26/07/2017 18:32

I'd assume you were a good wife fan Grin

Laquila · 26/07/2017 19:32

I think that's Elsbeth, Imer (and I guess herein lies a potential problem with Elspeth or Elsbeth - people may well hear the other!)

ElspethFlashman · 26/07/2017 19:35

^See my user name. Awesome literary character in the Flashman series.

Passmethecrisps · 27/07/2017 05:33

Love a bit of Family Ness @Mintish

Elspeth and Angus

Jijhebtseksmetezels · 27/07/2017 05:40

Has always been a favourite of mine since Flame Trees of Thikka.

CakeRattleandRoll · 27/07/2017 05:50

Love it. One of my favourite names.

TurquoiseDress · 27/07/2017 10:14

Cute name but a bit too lispy sounding

supersix · 27/07/2017 12:05

Makes me think of the cartoon The Family Ness! Quite like it. There aren't many names that are more Scottish though!

AmaDablam · 27/07/2017 12:20

I have one! Goes by nn Elsie. Still love the name and we tend to get a lot positive comments but be prepared for mis-spellings and people asking "how do you say that?" if they see it written down. The this reason she is almost exclusively known as Elsie, rather than it just being a family nn as originally intended. Don't regret our choice though and hopefully she'll carry it well throughout her life. Incidentally the only other Elspeth I've ever known used the nn Beth.

Joeybee · 28/07/2017 04:50

Elspeth is my DH favourite girls name, but i've vetoed it. I just don't like the 'peth' sound...like pith, like the bitter pith that you pick off a satsuma or something.
I do think it's an elegant name and a great alternative to Elizabeth, and you can get Elle/Ely as a nickname, which lots of people would like. (Personally I have a bad association with Ely as it is DH's ex....so more reason I don't like this name!).

ConstanceCraving · 28/07/2017 06:52

PP's have described it as witchy and lispy and that sums up just what I think.
