We are not expecting but TTC. Our two have pretty unique names (not wacky or unheard of, just different) we have our boys name picked out but girls I really like Athena and Amethyst. DP agrees with Athena but isn't sure on amethyst. I really prefer it over Athena and mum likes it (other family members have thought I was joking when I said it lol)

What do you think of the name?

Well... it's no Pegasus, but still not great, OP, sorry.

Tottyandmarchpane1 · 19/07/2017 13:39

Awful!!!!!!

TheLegendOfBeans · 19/07/2017 13:40

I like it!

Did you know that Iggy Azalea's real name is Amethyst Kelly?

HOWEVER; If it was down to me I'd pick Athena. It's a little less "out there" and it's really elegant x

Hazandduck · 19/07/2017 13:48

I love both Athena and Amethyst, have never heard it before. Pretty and unusual. Would you ever shorten it?

FizzyGreenWater · 19/07/2017 13:54

Aside from being v unusual, it's also really fussy and frilly. Not as elegant as Athena by a long way.

Plus- you'll end up with an Amy for short, as no one will call her Amethyst, which is perfectly nice but perhaps not the unusual name outcome you intended!

17caterpillars1mouse · 19/07/2017 14:05

I like it. It's pretty and uncommon but we'll known. It's not like you want diamond or Crystal, plus people use Ruby and Made and even Sapphire white often so why not. Ami (pronounced Am-ee) could be a cute shortening and isn't to dissimilar from the ever popular Emmy, Ozzie, Ellie etc.

MidnightVelvetthe7th · 19/07/2017 14:12

I'm unsure, here's what comes to mind:

Its not a gem name as its not a gem, its a semi precious stone but then so is Amber. Its not dreadfully old fashioned like Beryl or Pearl & not overused like Ruby. I know a Cristal & a Sapphire & whilst both women are perfectly nice they do get unfairly judged by their names.

The meaning of Amethyst without looking it up, is something to do with drunkeness, its the birth stone for February & its actually a very pretty stone, I have an amethyst ring.

I remain unsure tbh OP, nothing hugely good or bad but its not elegant & there is the possibility of Misty/Missy as a nickname if you don't like Amy

MidnightVelvetthe7th · 19/07/2017 14:13

Oh also, be careful of the initials as its an A, when you put it with your surname does it spell/are initials for anything.....

Not a fan. But Athena is lovely.

Kirbs1979 · 19/07/2017 15:05

I like the name Amethyst. One of my favourite books when I was little was The ordinary princess, it was the main characters name and was shortened to Amy. My OH said no to Amethyst but yes to Aimee.

Ktown · 19/07/2017 15:14

Love it
But I am an amateur geologist and would have like to use emerald as a name!

ilivebythesea · 19/07/2017 15:58

Must admit I prefer Athena. Got to thinking about 'gem' names and remembered Emerald Fennell, who plays Patsy in Call the Midwife - I wonder how she got on at school with such an unusual name?

MikeUniformMike · 19/07/2017 18:40

I like it.

SittingAround1 · 19/07/2017 20:00

I think it's awful. Athena is much better.

peterkin · 19/07/2017 20:01

Yy to The Ordinary Princess! Amy!

peterkin · 19/07/2017 20:04

ilivebythesea Emerald Fennell went to Marlborough so I doubt she stood out Wink

RelaxMax · 19/07/2017 20:04

Prefer Athena

Amethyst is likely to get more popular soon (it's iggy azaleas real name)

Athena is more classy

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 19/07/2017 20:05

Not sure, but I do love Athena. OP, your baby, your call.💐
My birthstone is amythest, so I'm biased 😄

ilivebythesea · 19/07/2017 20:07

peterkin - yes, it was probably a bit run of the mill there!! Think she went to Oxford too!

strawberrypenguin · 19/07/2017 20:31

I don't dislike it but I think I'd go for Athena - I really like it

Rainybo · 19/07/2017 20:34

There is an Amethyst is DDs class, her name hasn't been shortened at all and now aged 11. Go forvit!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 19/07/2017 20:35

Gorgeous name.

Love Amethyst

Outbackshack · 19/07/2017 20:35

My friend has it as a middle name and absolutely hates it. She find she it really embarrassing if she has to write it on anything formal.

Rhubarbtart9 · 19/07/2017 20:37

I like it a lot. Prefer amethyst
