Hi, my husband and I are expecting our first baby girl and are stuck for a name. We seem fixated on one but celebs knabbed it which means it's not out but a dampner iyswim. We are both alternative so would love a dark name that's beautiful. Surname is spelt differently but same as Kirstie from location.

So far we have

Luna Fae (fairy in French)
Luna Celeste
Serephina

Undecided on Tabitha (is it cats name?), Willow (what if they are not svelte? Like naming a weedy boy Thor iyswim).

Love but can't have Lily or Violet (already in use), Persephone (too close to mine by sound) and Wednesday is bit try too hard but could be a middle name if she's born on a Wednesday ;-)

All ears if anyone has any ideas. Don't mind more out there names/ spiritual/ natural or unisex names.

Thanks some lovely names here, a few a little too niche but others we had not come across and most people being helpful.

Regarding the others personal taste is just that, not your taste fair enough. That's why I usually don't partake in other threads on the baby names as I doubt you would want our opinion!

Few bits Fae was on a baby name site as french fairy so hmmm spelling could be issue. And gutted about the hp thing with Luna liked it for years :-(

I'm going to go through the suggestions with my Husband later, we are looking for one which is lovely with a hint of the dark but suitable for any little lady and what they want to be.

Due October so a little dark is to be expected! Be back later with a list we both like.

Morgan (Morgana also nice)
Autumn (as she will be an October baby)
Leila
Sara (I find this unusual and beautiful, personally)
Amber
Mary (as in Shelley)
Matilda (comes up a lot in Gothic novels)
Zara

Romulan it's so sad when a name is "demonised" isn't it?

Please don't name your child Lilith, aka the child snatching demon
Only if you believe the 'demonisation' that later religions imposed on their conquered cultures. Here's another definition of Lilith www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Lilith

Why would anyone name a child Morwenna?
Maybe they watch Poldark and like the character.

The OP asked for dark and delicious names and when looking for meanings, it's educational to investigate the origins if it's seen nowadays as a mythological character like a triple goddess, as opposed to the conquering civilisation's vilification of the conquered peoples' beliefs.
Cultures who did not have written records were not exactly accurately documented by their conquerors, they were generally portrayed as superstitious verging on "evil" who needed to be shown the error of their ways by adopting the conquering society's values.

Finally a name thread that has my dd's name on it! 😁

blankface · 12/07/2017 12:31

Fae was on a baby name site as french fairy definitely wrong spelling, Fee with an accent on one of the e letters is French for fairy.

Fae and faerie/faery I think could be Irish but do investigate yourself, they tend to be spelt that way in mythology and mystical/fantasy books e.g. www.worldoffroud.com/books/bfwof.php

Fey is I think an older English spelling, fey folk being fairy/faerie folk, but I'm no authority on the subject.

MineKraftCheese · 12/07/2017 12:37

Elphaba 💚 I think Elphie is a super cute nn or even Phab!

I know Wicked is popular but never met an Elphaba.

Trytowin · 12/07/2017 12:42

Great blank I'm glad someone raised it. Was going to later when I could link. Assuming re Lilith it's the wronged first wife of Adam who had her rep sullied by religious text/ folklore?

I think so trytowin it's a name I've always liked so did look it up years ago and was happy it did not have awful connotations in its original use. I didn't use it for my dd, but it was a contender Smile

Pick whichever name or names you are happy with for your baby, she's yours and if someone says they don't like her name, feel free to use any version of the sentiment "Well we like it and we're happy with it and that's all that matters" Grin

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 12/07/2017 12:58

Lilah

One of its meanings is night beauty, although i have also seen it as 'she who walks in darkness'

Like morgana and fae, raven and morven are nice too

OrangeJulius · 12/07/2017 13:10

Cordelia

Also, I met a child named Luna a couple years ago and I didn't think of Harry Potter at all.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 12/07/2017 13:11

Lyra and Tabitha would both be on my list for a dd but I have a ds called Felix and think that claiming that names are 'animal' names is just stupid and I bet Pope Felix and Saint Felix didn't have this problem.

Notmyrealname85 · 12/07/2017 13:16

+1 for Morgana

I once knew an old lady called Ysette but can't find it's meaning anywhere (that's definitely the spelling!) - quite mysterious maybe!

spiderlight · 12/07/2017 13:42

I love Lyra.
Morwenna is my teenage niece's name and she loves it.

Wilhelminaaa · 12/07/2017 13:57

Alpaca

Mara is a perfectly nice name, nobody would know the link to the religious stuff! There are other reasons to name a child Mara, I like it as a nn for Amara personally. But she did ask for 'dark' names. Mara only has those bad connotations if you really look into the name... Nobody would, so it wouldn't be a big deal.

Wilhelminaaa · 12/07/2017 14:04

I have a DD called Luna OP... But I DID name her after the Harry Potter character. Grin

tararabumdeay · 12/07/2017 14:12

Recently met someone who wanted to name girl 'Ember'. Fair enough for but I couldn't get over the 'dying' flame.

Reminded me of Fiamma, I met her at college over 30 years ago. Wow, she was impressive!

Wilhelminaaa · 12/07/2017 14:12

Try

www.myjewishlearning.com/article/lilith-lady-flying-in-darkness/

This is quite interesting regarding Lilith.

midsomermurderess · 12/07/2017 14:18

Persephone, Queen of the underworld. An alternaitve might be Croa (from Kore, maiden).

GrumpyOldBag · 12/07/2017 14:19

Gaia

midsomermurderess · 12/07/2017 14:19

Sorry, just seen Persephone is out!

Strummerville · 12/07/2017 14:22

Love some of these.

I once knew a girl called Merrigan; never heard of it since, but always loved the name. I think it has that earthy / airy / Pagan vibe somehow.

MikeUniformMike · 12/07/2017 16:00

Morgane.
Raven
Velvet

MineKraftCheese · 12/07/2017 16:07

@Strummerville Merrigan is ace! Sort of Tolkien-y.

thebadhiccups · 12/07/2017 16:07

Vashti
Aurora
Seren
Iris
Iona
