Talk me down

My husband refuses to entertain this name and I admit it is somewhat bracing but at the moment I love its strong femininity.
Leopoldine

Is it too horrendous?

Sorry sounds like a cure for constipation.

Creatureofthenight · 11/07/2017 13:45

I've never heard it before and I'm afraid I don't like it.

RelaxMax · 11/07/2017 13:46

Sorry. Horrible.

firawla · 11/07/2017 13:46

I would have thought it's a boy but as you've said femininity - is it for a girl??

Snap8TheCat · 11/07/2017 13:47

'Talk me down' what the hell is with this phrase? You sound odd.

SealSong · 11/07/2017 13:49

Leopoldine? Very odd name, sorry.

abbsisspartacus · 11/07/2017 13:50

Is that name a moth?

LiviaAD · 11/07/2017 13:51

Thank you all, I think it must be the hormones then.

Snap8TheCat, well I'd rather sound odd than rude, I'm using a vernacular phrase, 'talking someone down" refers to being talked down off the ledge.

I quite like it but then I like names like Georgette, Benjamina and Thomasina too.

I like Leo or Poldi as a nn for a girl. Maybe he'd be more open to Leonora?

LiviaAD · 11/07/2017 13:53

It's my grandmother's name and great great grandmother's name, I've always had a soft spot for its ugliness but as everyone agrees it's awful, I'll accept the vox populi!

OP posts:
annasfarmgirl · 11/07/2017 13:55

Sorry OP, it is WAY too old fashioned/European royalty for use these days, unless possibly you are Vair Vair Posh and she will be called Binky or Fiddle or Wops for her whole life anyway.

Leonora is an acceptable modern English equivalent?

Snap8TheCat · 11/07/2017 13:55

Well quite! You're not suicidal on a ledge hoping someone will save your life. It's disrespectful.

annasfarmgirl · 11/07/2017 13:57

Ah, cross-posted with the 'family name' explanation.

I'm afraid my comment stands, unless you are an old landowning family or she will have a title then I would give it a big miss.

LiviaAD · 11/07/2017 13:57

For goodness sake Snap8TheCat, well I hope it wasn't taken that way by everyone else, it's used quite often in every day chit chat to mean steer me away from, blah blah blah.

OP posts:
LiviaAD · 11/07/2017 13:58

Yes it's a family name, maybe I'll squeeze it in as middle name

OP posts:
PopcornNRedwine · 11/07/2017 14:01

I dislike the "dine" part. I just feel it ages the name.

Leonara,
Leonora,
Leopolda,
Leonie,
Leona,
Leontyne

But there are lots of names that end in "ine"

It's unusual. But don't let it put you off. It's not to my taste. But sometimes it's nice to pick something different

annasfarmgirl · 11/07/2017 14:01

I think that would be fair enough OP! It's nice to carry on family names IMO, but I think it's way too unwieldy for a given name these days when fashions tend towards shorter rather than longer.

What was your grandmother called in day-to-day life, if you don't mind me asking?

elQuintoConyo · 11/07/2017 14:01

No disrepect for your GM or GGM, but that is one ugly name! It sounds a bit made up. Perhaps Leonora could be seen as both a nod to your relatives and a touch more modern. And it is a lovely name.

MumBod · 11/07/2017 14:05

Leonie for short?

MikeUniformMike · 11/07/2017 14:05

I know a Leopoldina.
Nancy Mitford's Love in a cold climate has a character called Leopoldina, known as Polly.
I like it.

LiviaAD · 11/07/2017 14:07

I know, I really agree with you, it is quite ugly, if it wasn't a family name, I'd be rolling my eyes too, but I've become immune too it as I've read it and heard it all of my life.

annasfarmgirl - they were both was known as Leopoldine most of the time, occasionally Poldi, that side of the family is/was very formal.

LiviaAD · 11/07/2017 14:09

Thank you everyone, I'm not going to use it, is in clunky and it wouldn't go down well nowadays as a first name, it just doesn't translate to the modern age, at best I will squeeze it in to a middle name or third name out of respect.

OP posts:
LiviaAD · 11/07/2017 14:10

I know a Leopoldina too, the 'a' is a very pretty add on.

OP posts:
krakentoast · 11/07/2017 14:16

Well... I like it! Could use Polly as a nickname for a more "normal" compromise?

If not, then that's what middle names are for Grin

PopcornNRedwine · 11/07/2017 14:57

I like Poldi! It's nice to carry on family names.
