My husband refuses to entertain this name and I admit it is somewhat bracing but at the moment I love its strong femininity.
Leopoldine

Is it too horrendous?

Another here thinking something like Leonora would reference your family history without indicting it. Also Leo is lovely for
either gender. My DD has a lovely friend called Leonora who is known as Leo.

MikeUniformMike · 11/07/2017 15:34

I don't like Leonora. Leonie is OK.
Leopoldina is wow! Polly is great. (not keen on Pollz)

RortyCrankle · 11/07/2017 15:56

Be grateful your DH has good taste.

Jooni · 11/07/2017 16:13

How about Leontine? Similar sound and feel, bit less OTT?

Jooni · 11/07/2017 16:13

Or Leonor? I love Leonor!

IsadoraQuagmire · 11/07/2017 16:20

Mike I immediately thought of Polly Hampton. Leopoldina's a lovely name.

MammieBear · 11/07/2017 16:29

I've heard of it it's the German feminisation of Leopold like Wilhelmine/Wilhelm. It's not everyone's cup of tea but Albertine is on the upswing in certain circles.

chowmeinchick · 11/07/2017 16:38

How do you even say this? 🙈 it looks like some sort of medicine.

n0ne · 11/07/2017 17:05

I like it but would use as a middle name. It's very, um, bold for a first name.

Decaffstilltastesweird · 11/07/2017 17:45

Oh it's dreadful. I'm so sorry to say that knowing it was the name of your relative op. I'm sure she was a wonderful woman in other respects, but the name is just awful to me.

I love Leonora. It's one of my favourite names. Leontine is very nice too. Nns Leo or Nora (for Leonora). The nn Poldi suggested by pp, is just horrid imho and sounds like a combination of the words mouldy and palsy.

annasfarmgirl · 11/07/2017 18:56

mike Yes!!! I couldn't think where else I (almost) knew it from! I take thee, Leopoldina! Love that book Grin

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 11/07/2017 19:01

How about Leontine, I love this name, it has a similar vibe.

Oysterbabe · 11/07/2017 19:17

It is a beautiful name for an industrial cleaner.

How about Poldark?

mamalovesmojitos · 11/07/2017 19:52

I actually like it! Have never come across it before....would need a good nn and a suitable surname. But I think it's cool Smile

Oly5 · 11/07/2017 19:55

It's awful!

SuperBeagle · 11/07/2017 20:26

What about Leonore or Leonora?

Stardustandicecream · 11/07/2017 20:46

Leonora is lovely!

Stardustandicecream · 11/07/2017 20:46

Although she'd probably get nn Lenor all through school

ilivebythesea · 11/07/2017 20:50

How about Polly Leonora? Then you have some of the original name, but with a contemporary twist?

mygorgeousmilo · 11/07/2017 20:57

It grows on you, that's for sure. I initially wanted to say NO way, and yet, I started to like it as I've scrolled down the thread! Grin very Imperial/Victorian/Roman-esque.... I don't know that's especially fashionable these days.

squoosh · 11/07/2017 21:27

Wow, that's quite an imposing name! 😆

Very Euro royal, diamond bedecked, grande dame.

grufallosfriend · 11/07/2017 22:46

I know a little German girl called Leopoldine. It's an old name making a comeback, like Josephine and Wilhelmine.

buttercup54321 · 11/07/2017 23:05

Glad you aren't going to use it. Really awful name x

Sophronia · 11/07/2017 23:13

I quite like it! I also like Leonor, Leonora, Leona and Leonie.

ConstanceCraving · 12/07/2017 10:01

Oh no OP it's an ugly name sorry! I like the suggestion of Leontine though and I do like Leonora.
