Similar to the Frances thread. How would you pronounce Alexander? Alex-ARN-der or Alex-AN-der?

Alex-an-der.

helly29 · 09/07/2017 12:43

Alex-an-der, but surely this will just be a north(ish) south(ish) short 'a' /long 'a' difference?

Jooni · 09/07/2017 12:53

I'd say it with an "AN" sound, but agree it's just accent surely?

TonicAndTonic · 09/07/2017 12:56

Alex-ARN-der. I live in the south and it's the only pronunciation of it I've heard round here! I too would assume there's regional variation.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/07/2017 12:58

Arn

Hulababy · 09/07/2017 12:59

Live in Yorkshire and would say Alex-AN-der

ChampagneCommunist · 09/07/2017 13:00

ARN. I'm in the south too

itsbetterthanabox · 09/07/2017 13:00

Down south so arn

Raines100 · 09/07/2017 13:01

Arn. Home counties.

MyNewBearTotoro · 09/07/2017 13:05

I would say either - I have lived in North, South and Wales so used to both and I find whether I use long vowel or short vowel sound depends on who I'm with, but sometimes I will switch even in the same conversation.

Notreallyarsed · 09/07/2017 13:06

I'm Scottish so I'd use the AN rather than ARN.

pissedglitter · 09/07/2017 13:08

Alexander with no R in the middle as there is no R in the middle

NoBetterName · 09/07/2017 13:09

I pronounce our Alexander's name as Alex :-) (unless he's in trouble....)

OvO · 09/07/2017 13:10

AN

But I'm Scottish and we generally don't add in R's like a lot of English accents do.

KoalaDownUnder · 09/07/2017 13:10

AN with a short 'A', as in 'cat'.

Not 'AH' as in 'far'.

bridgetreilly · 09/07/2017 13:11

Alex - ahn -der. Long a. But really it's just a regional accent thing, rather than a correct pronunciation thing.

KoalaDownUnder · 09/07/2017 13:11

Eh? Nobody's talking about adding an actual 'R' sound, surely? Confused

It's long vs short 'a'.

Sandsnake · 09/07/2017 13:13

My Alexander is from the home counties and is pronounced with the not flat 'ar' sound in the middle. I like it either way though. He's usually just Alex though, as much as I love the full version of the name!

Pissed - yes there's no 'R' in the middle but the majority of the population (at a guess) use the pronunciation of 'A' the southern way, so we must be right... Wink

sleepyhead · 09/07/2017 15:27

Short A sound as it's the only A sound my accent has.

Crabbo · 09/07/2017 15:30

Just depends on your accent surely? My brother is Alexander - mum says ARN (southern), dad says AN (Scottish) - it's still the same name.

NuffSaidSam · 09/07/2017 15:31

Alex-ARN-der.

London.

CatRash · 09/07/2017 15:39

ARN.

East Anglia

Susiethetortoiseshellcat · 09/07/2017 16:32

Arn. Also East Anglia

RoseVase2010 · 09/07/2017 16:35

Alex-ARN-der, I've never heard it pronounced any other way!

dementedma · 09/07/2017 16:37
