Similar to the Frances thread. How would you pronounce Alexander? Alex-ARN-der or Alex-AN-der?

Does no-one else say Alex-sander? Blush

Every Alexander I know is pronouced that way and has the nick name Sandy or Zander.

Argeles · 09/07/2017 17:15

AlexARNder.

I'm a Londoner.

I have an urge to launch a catapult at people who pronounce it Alex-AN-der!

TurquoiseOwl · 09/07/2017 17:25

Alex - ARN - der Smile Essex...

Thingsmustchange · 09/07/2017 23:15

Short 'a' here as DH and I are both from the north. When our Alexander was born and we lived in London most people we knew said AlexAHNder which sounded rather pretentious to me. Just what you're used to I guess.

userres · 09/07/2017 23:19

ARN - down south to

Dibbles1967 · 10/07/2017 04:14

Alex-arn-der

BenLui · 10/07/2017 04:29

Alex-ander

HunterHearstHelmsley · 10/07/2017 05:05

An.

I know it's accents but arn sounds try hard.

splendide · 10/07/2017 05:15

Trying hard to be what?

HunterHearstHelmsley · 10/07/2017 05:43

Erm. Ha.

It sounds pretentious. It just doesn't doubt right at all.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/07/2017 05:46

Arn in a quite big standard South London accent that doesn't (believe me) sound try hard. Or 'ard as it's correctly pronounced! Wink

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/07/2017 05:46

*bog

SuperBeagle · 10/07/2017 05:47

Alex-ANN-der.

Ann to rhyme with man.

This is the reason I didn't name DD Alexandra. I couldn't bloody stand the pronunciation Alex-ARN-dra, which I heard every now and then.

I'm in Australia.

swimmerforlife · 10/07/2017 05:50

AlexANder.

New Zealand accent. (Though I live in London).

unikorn · 10/07/2017 05:56

Arn

Class - cl-ar-ss
Castle - c-ar-stle
Bath - b-ar-th

From Surrey. I can't bear the short a sound.

Ohyesiam · 10/07/2017 06:02

Just as long as you don't say Aleggsander, you can do what you want with the a.

TurquoiseOwl · 10/07/2017 09:07

@unikorn - that's a bit harsh! It's just an accent. Bit rude to say you don't like it when so many people on here have that accent.

SuperBeagle · 10/07/2017 09:44

unikorn I say all of those words the way you say then, yet don't pronounce Alexander with an arn sound.

TurquoiseOwl · 10/07/2017 10:03

@SuperBeagle - I'm guessing you still say 'aan' like the end of naan??? Instead of an Anne sound in the middle? Or do you say it Alex - anne - dah??? I think that's the different pronunciation they mean? I hear Alex - anne - dah up north and Alex - arn - dah or Alex - aan - dah down south.
