For a baby girl...
Bluebelle (my favourite...nn belle)
Carlotta (DH's favourite...nn Lotta or Lottie)
Ashling (both like this...nn Asha)

bluebelle is a cows name
seriously

carlotta is ok- makes me think of carlotta the gypsy girl from enid blyton stories but ok

ashling...do you mean aisling? It's ok if it's spelt aisling [ie the correct irish name] but otherwise it's not great

SquirrelWatcher · 08/07/2017 00:25

Not bluebelle, sorry.

LovingLola · 08/07/2017 00:25

Why oh why do people feel they have to give a nickname to their children???

Justhadmyhaircut · 08/07/2017 00:31

Ah my gm had a cat called Bluebelle!!
None. .

MrsBadger · 08/07/2017 00:34

Belle by itself is much better than Bluebell, and very much better than Bluebelle.
Lotta by itself is pretty too.

(If you know you're going to use a nickname like these why bother with the long version?)

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 08/07/2017 00:39

Bluebelle is not a child's name. Please do not be so cruel as to call your kid that.

lazycrazyhazy · 08/07/2017 00:43

I like Bluebell, though personally I'd drop that last E unless you're French (maybe just me).
I don't find naming a child after a flower at all strange

I like Carlotta too and it's unusual.

I don't like your third suggestion.

shambolicgreenfox · 08/07/2017 01:17

Why is Bluebell (ok, I'll drop the second 'e'!) any different from Rose, Hazel, Daisy, Primrose & other flower/nature names? Would the nn Blue be better than Belle? Root - Daisy is more of a cow's name than Bluebell & it's lovely! It's still my favourite. But I could be swayed & am willing to listen to the criticism! I don't want to be cruel!

As for why give your child a nn? Lots of people do! And because I think it's important to consider what family & friends will shorten it to. Names get shortened all the time, so it's not so much a nn I suppose, more a less formal, 'friendlier' version of the name.

Maybe Ashleen then, instead of the traditional Aisling spelling as outsude of Ireland she'd be constantly correcting people.

Keep the opinions coming! It'll definitely be one of these three...hopefully Bluebell!

Bluebell is worse than Bluebelle and for a nickname Blue is massively worse than Belle. At least Belle is a name, Blue isn't! It's a colour!

Rose, Hazel, Daisy etc are all established names. Bluebell(e) is not. That's the difference. She'd be forever getting side eyed and laughed about by people.

thisisafreename · 08/07/2017 01:27

Have to agree with other posters.

This child will have this name for life. If she is admitted to a particular profession, that will be on her cert: Bluebell (Insert Surname).
I really don't think she will appreciate it as she grows older.

I would suggest Aisling. It's normal and won't cause her embarrassment as she ages.

shambolicgreenfox · 08/07/2017 01:33

DP is really campaigning for Carlotta. So, taking on board the hate for Bluebell (I'm going to just have to get a cat, aren't I?! Or a cow...) would you go Carlie or Lotta? Aisling would be the 3rd choice tbh.

DontMentionTheWar · 08/07/2017 01:34

Isn't Geri Halliwell's daughter called Bluebell?

I prefer Carlotta to Bluebell although, if you like Spanish, names I think Ramona is nicer as it's softer sounding. I also like Carmen.

Aisling is very pretty but should be spelt Aisling. Any other spelling just looks awful.

DJME · 08/07/2017 01:34

i think Bluebell is lovely! She can always change her name if she really hates it, or go by Bell

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 08/07/2017 01:36

I don't like Carlotta or Lotta but I love Lottie.

Ashling is very pretty.

Iggity · 08/07/2017 01:36

Blubelle, no. Why would you inflict that on a child?
Carlotta, no, too much unless destined to be Spanish princess or Italian opera singer. My first thought was also Enid Blyton.
Aisling only if you spell it correctly. If I saw it spelled Ashleen, I would think the parent didn't know any better but in this case, you do. It's a nice name.

user1496272879 · 08/07/2017 01:37

Not bluebell, please. Aisling is my first choice. Carlotta is ok, I don't like Lotta personally

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 08/07/2017 01:37

*Aisling

Though I must admit I do prefer Ashley/Ashleigh

wobblywonderwoman · 08/07/2017 01:42

I don't really rate Bluebell or Carlotta and Aisling is quite a boring Irish name (know plenty )

Charlotte would be better as Lottie or Cassie is nice

Bella on its own also fine

Sophronia · 08/07/2017 02:04

Definitely Carlotta! Love it. Lotta/Lottie is nice.

SpicyBeanzy · 08/07/2017 02:09

Carlotta is lovely

OkPedro · 08/07/2017 02:22

Aisling is not pronounced Ashleen though 🙄 It's Ash Ling
Please don't inflict Bluebelle on the child, just belle is lovely.

GinIsIn · 08/07/2017 03:10

Honest opinions? Well, they aren't great. Bluebelle is hideous unless you are a jersey heifer, and the extra e makes it worse.

Aisling is ok but people will pronounce it wrong.

Carlotta I like but Carli is awful - really dated!

DownUdderer · 08/07/2017 04:17

Love love love bluebell!! So pretty!

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 08/07/2017 05:16

I don't particularly like the name Bluebell but your child, your choice. Don't spell it Bluebelle though. That is just wrote g! Why do that?
And at least you can shorten it to Belle , which is pretty.

nooka · 08/07/2017 05:21

I quite like Carlotta, and you could use Lotta, Lottie, Carla or Carli. I'd not decide until she arrives and you can see which one evolves naturally (my dd now mostly uses the shortening we didn't really like, but as it's her name it's obviously beautiful just like her :))
