What do we think of this name for a girl? Too weird, difficult to spell/pronounce? Too close to sibling Vera?

Rest of revised list:

Thalia
Lana
Flora
Lydia

I like it. It's my cat's formal name.

But is too much like Vera I think.

AvoidingCallenetics · 04/07/2017 16:37

Nothing like Vera to me. I like it.

34AQuid · 04/07/2017 16:37

Love it. I know a grown-up Phaedra and she is extremely cool Grin

MammieBear · 04/07/2017 16:37

No I wouldn't say it's too difficult to spell or pronounce, it's unusual I'll give it that! From your list I think Flora goes well with Vera. Smile

lanouvelleheloise · 04/07/2017 16:39

I can only really think of the mythological story when I hear the name - not the happiest of associations. Might just be me, though. I like Thalia - for the same reasons!

TerfwithaNerf · 04/07/2017 16:40

I absolutely love it but think it's too similar sounding to Vera and that takes the sheen off it a bit.

butterflycatcher · 04/07/2017 18:10

Is this pronounced Fee-dra? It does sound quite similar to Vera if so.

SumAndSubstance · 04/07/2017 18:21

Me too. I distinctly remember being horrified by it when I was at school!

WinifredAtwellsOtherPiano · 04/07/2017 18:22

Pretty but ill-starred.

FadedRed · 04/07/2017 18:26

Love it.
She will have to spell and pronounce it to new people for the rest of her life, unless the new people are Greek.
But it's unusual and will be remembered.
Her friends will call her Phae (Fay), which is a nice name too.

lanouvelleheloise · 04/07/2017 18:28

I've heard both Fay-dra and Fee-dra in English. Fay-dra sounds different enough from Vera to me. In Ancient Greek, I've always said FY-druh, but I'm now doubting myself on this since it's not really my area, I just have a smattering. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can help!

Glad I'm not the only one thinking of the mythic!

junebirthdaygirl · 04/07/2017 18:28

Love Flora with Vera

AnnaNimmity · 04/07/2017 18:30

I really love it too - nearly called my dd this. There's one at my dds school (whose parents are greek) and she pronounces it Fedra. (I thought it was Faydra?).

Cynara · 04/07/2017 18:31

Wowser I am fascinated by this: What is you cat called when she's among friends? In a relaxed, informal setting?

Sundayspilot · 04/07/2017 18:34

I'd go with Lydia, myself. Phaedra is a very popular cat name in my area. Sorry Blush

lanouvelleheloise · 04/07/2017 18:34

cynara - I would find it nearly impossible not to call a cat formally known as Phaedra, Fifi.

MercuryMadness · 04/07/2017 18:37

I cannot imagine how thrust can sound like Vera.

I pronounce it f-eye-dra

WillRikersExtraNipple · 04/07/2017 18:38

It's fay-dra.

n0ne · 04/07/2017 18:38

I thought it was pronounced fay-dra. So different enough to Vera? I'm not sure.

I know the myth is pretty horrible... Talking myself out of it now.

TerfwithaNerf · 04/07/2017 18:41

Fae-druh is how I thought it was pronounced.

So not full on 'fay' and not full on 'dra' iyswim.

Sophronia · 04/07/2017 18:45

I don't think it's too similar to Vera at all.

It's a nice name. It makes me think of Peaches Geldof's son though.

MrsBadger · 04/07/2017 18:45

From your list, Lydia - Flora is lovely but just a tiny bit too close to Vera.

(I know sisters Annabel and Isobel and it's just a bit much)

Sophronia · 04/07/2017 18:46

I love Thalia, Lydia and Flora.

BattyBagshot · 04/07/2017 19:00

I'd pronounce it F-eye-druh. If I was Phaedra, I think I'd resent Vera her normal name...

mistermagpie · 04/07/2017 19:15

I don't think I could put it with Vera, I'm not a die-hard 'sibling names have to match' person but Vera is a (very nice) old nana name and Phaedra just... isn't? What about Phoebe?
