What do we think of this name for a girl? Too weird, difficult to spell/pronounce? Too close to sibling Vera?

Rest of revised list:

Thalia
Lana
Flora
Lydia

Lydia is my favourite on your list though.

Wildthoughts · 04/07/2017 19:17

I think it does sound like Vera now you have explained how it's pronounced.

JakeBallardswife · 04/07/2017 19:17

I always wanted a phyllida but was too conservative.

Jooni · 04/07/2017 19:33

I'm not keen. I can kind of see the appeal but the story behind it is horrible and people seem to pronounce it all different ways. How about Petra or Feodora?

WowserBowser · 04/07/2017 19:33

@Cynara - she is indeed a Fifi!

SuperBeagle · 04/07/2017 21:50

Reminds me of Peaches Geldof and her kid (who I think's a boy).

Like Lana the most of your list. Flora second. Smile

My best friend as a child was called Phaedra - (Fay -dra) she always shortened it and signed her name as 'Faye'. I think it's lovely.

alltouchedout · 04/07/2017 22:50

I love Lydia.

Thisisanotherusername · 04/07/2017 22:54

it's usually pronounced with an 'ee' sound rather than an 'ay' - like 'fidra' with a long i.

buttercup54321 · 04/07/2017 23:15

I know a boy called Phaedra. Only little atm but feel sorry for him! Nice for a girl though.

No it isn't.

lanouvelleheloise · 05/07/2017 09:28

Just spoke to a friend who is a bit of a classicist (though not an academic), and she says she thinks the Ancient Greek would be FY-DRUH, but in English it can be either FAY-druh or FEE-druh.

lanouvelleheloise · 05/07/2017 09:28

However, if a classicist should come along, I will be happy to stand corrected. Genuinely interested now to know!

MercuryMadness · 05/07/2017 10:34

I really think the classic pronunication

is F-eye-druh

That makes sense. I might've spent too much time listening to Edith Hall saying 'pheedruh'.

Drybonesthatdream · 05/07/2017 11:01

I love Lydia. I had no idea how to pronounce your first choice so that put me straight off it, sorry. I also don't think it sits well with Vera.

BertrandRussell · 05/07/2017 11:06

You wouldn't really want her looking up her classical namesake.........

PenelopeFlintstone · 05/07/2017 11:25

Isn't it FEE-dra? The ae pronounced ee like in arch-ae-ology?

Glumglowworm · 05/07/2017 13:34

There was one on Naked and Afraid I watch quality tv who was pronounced fay-dra. She was a bit alternative but a very tough cookie, got dysentery and refused to give up. That's the only one I've ever "known"
