Not so common a name I think.

Only heard of Bastian or basti as a shortening for Sebastian in Germany

ineedamoreadultieradult · 03/07/2017 18:28

Too close to bastard for me I think, how about Sebastian?

Twinkletowedelephant · 03/07/2017 18:30

I know a couple of Sebastians shortened to Bastie.

ThomasRichard · 03/07/2017 18:31

IIRC Bastien with an 'e' is a French name.

Bastion makes me think of a slightly dimwitted lump, I'm afraid. I'm not sure why the French version sounds better, but it does.

Smitff · 03/07/2017 18:31

Bastien, no?

You don't want him to be the last bastion of

Wolfiefan · 03/07/2017 18:31

Camp?

Figaro2017 · 03/07/2017 18:32

Everyone who served in Afghan will remember it!

OhTheRoses · 03/07/2017 18:33

That you had forgotten to add "Se".

MadisonAvenue · 03/07/2017 18:34

Only heard of it because of the German footballer, Bastian Schweinsteiger.

drinkingtea · 03/07/2017 18:34

It sounds like half of Sebastian.

It spumds like a name which is currently quite common in Germany, though tbh I don't know whether that is spelt as you spell it or with an a as in (Se)Bastian. Shortened further to Bastie, which I don't like.

Maverick66 · 03/07/2017 18:35

Please don't name your child this.

PattyPenguin · 03/07/2017 18:35

Bastion is a projecting part of a fortification such as a castle or fort. It's used in the expression "last bastion" meaning last stronghold, either literally ("the last bastion of enemy resistance") or metaphorically "a last bastion of conservative ideas").

Bastian is a common German diminutive of Sebastian (see "The Neverending Story").

Bastien is a less common French diminutive of the name Sebastien.

Nothing wrong with giving a boy the full name Sebastian and calling him Bastian.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 03/07/2017 18:36

I know a Bastiaan.

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 03/07/2017 18:37

He'll get called Bash as a NN.

Not keen.

Archfarchnad · 03/07/2017 18:38

There are strict rules governing what you can call babies in Germany, and any Bastions you may have encountered will undoubtedly be nicknames for Sebastian. I think it sounds awful, TBH. Basti is even worse.

EssentialHummus · 03/07/2017 18:38

Another "Go for Sebastian" from me, with Bastian as a NN if you like.

AssassinatedBeauty · 03/07/2017 18:39

Bastien would be ok, although I personally don't like how it sounds, and I wouldn't use a typically French name unless I had some connection to France. Bastian looks like a nickname for Sebastian, and looks too much like "bastard" due to the two "a"s in it.

Bastion looks strange to me, immediately reminds me of Camp Bastion/Afghanistan and of military type things due to the meaning of the word. So it wouldn't be one for me.

BagelGoesWalking · 03/07/2017 18:40

I think it's pretty bad, sorry. Just doesn't sound nice

BikeRunSki · 03/07/2017 18:42

Everything sounds better in French ThomasRichard Wink

Fettuccinecarbonara · 03/07/2017 18:45

It's the name of the boy in never ending story.

I quite like it Smile

lolalotta · 03/07/2017 18:45

Too close to bastard for me too.

Lilmisskittykat · 03/07/2017 18:54

Bastian is short for Sebastian .. I'd just give them the full name a shorten it as a family.

Never understand a nickname instead of the full version of a name

Lilmisskittykat · 03/07/2017 18:55

lol I thought of the never ending story too!

FruitTwist2017 · 03/07/2017 18:57

No, I don't like it...

FUNM · 03/07/2017 19:05

What about an Italian spin on it -Bastiano? lol
