Elynor or Elinor?

Which spelling do you prefer? Online Elynor has been described as a "creative" spelling of Elinor! I've (almost) ruled out the original spelling of Eleanor. Thanks guys!

Elinor isn't a Welsh name. It is acceptable as a Welsh name though.

KatherinaMinola · 28/06/2017 22:35

Elinor.

I don't think creative spellings work on classic names.

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/06/2017 23:16

Nobody said Elinor is a Welsh name, just it's the most commonly seen spelling of the name.

Eleanor isn't the original or traditional spelling of the name either.

SteppingOnToes · 28/06/2017 23:30

If you don't spell it the original way she will forever be having her name spelled 'wrong'. Bastardised spellings of names is just sooooo common...

SteppingOnToes · 28/06/2017 23:31

Well I never knew that Eleanor wasn't the original spelling - learn something new every day...

Longdistance · 28/06/2017 23:34

Eleanor.

I have one. You know it's the right decision Grin

WanderingTrolley1 · 28/06/2017 23:35

Eleanor

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 28/06/2017 23:44

Eleanor seems more elegant to me. I quite like Elinor and would have said that was prettier but seeing it written down so many times on this thread it looks a bit wrong (even though before reading the thread i preferred it).

bridgetreilly · 28/06/2017 23:47

Elinor is lovely.

Joeybee · 29/06/2017 08:02

Why not Eleanor? Any other spelling seems made up, like someone had tried to be original or 'unique', when really it looks a little tacky.

Aedie4 · 29/06/2017 09:12

I repeat, Elinor is not made up so can't be 'tacky' due to its 'unique spelling' some people's ignorance is outstanding...

Alisvolatpropiis · 29/06/2017 09:12

Read the thread did you Joey? Hmm

steppemum · 29/06/2017 09:24

Eleanor is far and away the best

then Elinor

Elynor is a non starter.

just for interest, in some languages it is spelt Elena

Scrumpernickel · 29/06/2017 10:49

Elinor is much nicer than Eleanor and I don't like the Elynor spelling.

Scrumpernickel · 29/06/2017 10:52

And if Elinor looks wrong or weird, well someone needs to nip back in time and let Jane Austen know Wink

Turquoisesea · 29/06/2017 10:55

My DD is Eleanor but I also know an Elena. I have an unusual name and have spent my life having to spell it to people. If you don't go for the traditional spelling your DD will spend her life correcting it

Hoddykins · 29/06/2017 11:02

I have an Eleanor NN Nelle/Nellie Smile

CotedePablo · 29/06/2017 11:05

Eleanor, at a push Elinor. Friend of mine called her daughter Elanor - it still jars with me when I see it written.

PattyPenguin · 29/06/2017 12:42

Elanor is a literary name, from The Lord of the Rings (it's the name of Sam Gamgee's first born daughter, taken from the name of a flower in the created language Sindarin).

Elena is a name in Romance languages derived from the Greek Helen/Helene.

Eleanor is, as PP have said, from Alienor, a name likely to derive from Aenor or Aénor, in turn derived from a Germanic name through the form Adenordis (Aanordis, Anordis, Anor). The form Adenordis is recorded in the 1090s and may itself be a corruption of Adamardis, apparently a feminine form of Ademar.

I don't have my name books to hand, so can't comment on the spelling(s) historically usual in England.

MrsMint · 29/06/2017 14:20

After looking at the names written so many times on here, I'm going to go with Eleanor, as it ticks all the boxes (for me anyway). Thanks again everyone!
