Looking for an unusual middle name for my son. Thanks!

Another vote for Florp.

Since when did Bear become a thang -I've seen it on here loads of times lately

Its like a word you've never heard in your life, then you hear it a dozen times in the space of a week! Maybe it's the bus syndrome...

Bear comes up a lot on here, yes. One of the popular unusual middle name offerings, along with Wolf and Fox etc Grin. Wren for girls.

Boopboopboop · 24/06/2017 14:06

I don't get beau, is it pronounced
Bo... or
Be-yu (like the start of beautiful)
?

iismum · 24/06/2017 14:15

I'm afraid I'd be impressed if playground insult included taunts about having the same name as a 1960s/70s Cons PM/leader.

Sure, but he's not going to be in the playground forever. I wouldn't like going through life with such a political name. And even though, as you say, nothing has been proven, it still raises connotations in people's minds which are maybe not the ones you want when they find out your child's name.

reuset · 24/06/2017 14:26

It's pronounced bo, boopboop

SunshineWard · 24/06/2017 14:26

@Boopboopboop Bo - it's French.

daisypond · 24/06/2017 14:32

I think those names don't have much in common, really. Bear is quite a modern-ish name, like Fox, Wolf, Tiger - or another predatory wild animal. Beau is dandyish - Beau Brummell and Regency England. Grey may be a fashionable colour for your walls right now, but grey has some unappealing associations to do with mediocre, inconsequential and unnoticeable. - "grey little man", etc - unless you're trying to get an "wise and old" vibe. It would work nicely if it was a surname adapted as a middle name for family reasons, though.

Re: Edward Heath. The police chief in charge of that investigation has said that it's not a conspiracy and that he was a pedophile. I don't know why people struggle to believe this now when we are trying to encourage a culture where victims of abuse speak out and are believed.

LottieandMia · 24/06/2017 14:34

Jamie Oliver's son is called Buddy Bear.

reuset · 24/06/2017 14:40

Nobody said they didn't believe it here, Lottie

Notso · 24/06/2017 14:43

Sure, but he's not going to be in the playground forever. I wouldn't like going through life with such a political name.

What about all the thousands of girls with May as a middle or hyphenated name? Honestly I don't see Heath as a political name anymore than I see Edward as a political name, I've known a Heath (first name) for four years and this is the first time it's crossed my mind.

LottieandMia · 24/06/2017 14:44

You said 'nothing has been proved'. I think people don't want to believe it happened because it was the prime minister and its worrying to think that someone running our country could be responsible for such a thing. I read the other threads about it as well and a lot of people were dismissing it as a conspiracy theory. Why is it believable that Jimmy Savile was involved but not Heath? There is plenty of evidence that it did happen.

iismum · 24/06/2017 15:12

What about all the thousands of girls with May as a middle or hyphenated name?

May as a middle or hyphenated name is fine. But if someone was proposing the name Theresa-May, I would strongly advise against it. Likewise Tony Blair Bloggs or John Major Smith.

I don't object to people using the name Heath, it was the proposal to use Edward Heath that I thought was unwise. And in this case the paedophilia issue massively compounds the problem of using the name of a prime minister.

iismum · 24/06/2017 15:14

Lottie I agree that the evidence seems fairly damning. I hedged a bit because I just wanted to raise the point that the name Edward Heath raised unfortunate connotations without detailing the thread with a discussion about what really happened.

Notso · 24/06/2017 15:26

Sorry iismum I managed to miss that someone suggested Edward and Heath together and thought you were referring to Heath as a stand alone name YANBU at all.

reuset · 24/06/2017 17:36

Lottie - it was iismum who said nothing had been proved. If you read my post, it was in reference to hers, I said "As you say, nothing has been proved". Anything else you'd like clearing up, Lottie?

My main point was that it would be an unlikely playground taunt. Wink

LottieandMia · 24/06/2017 17:42

I know, I'm sorry to derail the thread it's just a bugbear of mine that so many people don't believe he did anything.
